Hey Guys,
As I'm rather new to this whole hobby, I'd very much like some insight as to what sort of troops and HQ's I should be purchasing.

I already own 2 Tac squads, 1 Termi squad, 1 Assault squad, 1 scout squad, Rhino and a Dreadnaught, and was wondering what to get next.

Having only just completed one tactical squad (Rocket and Flamer), I'm still very open for additions and manipulations.
I do like Marinus Calgar and the stern/vanguards, but I'm unsure whether they are worth it or not.

I play defensively, and I prefer to chip away at my foes from range. So I'm unsure how to proceed.

Cheers for any advice you may have.

Well, SM is best played mechanized.
You have two full Tacticals and one Rhino. I'd add a Razorback.
Add the Scouts for your army list.
As HQ, I suggest a Librarian w/ nullzone, avenger. I attach mine to a Termie squad, so I give him terminator armor and storm shield.
The Dread complements your army so that you can play at the 1000 pt level.

Id pick up a transport for every 10 space marines you get. Specifically a razorback since you can always leave the top unglued and switch it between a rhino and razorback and it only costs a few bucks more.

A 5 man terminator TH/SS unit + a landraider crusader is a relative cost effective way to add a solid unit to your list with out spending tons of money or having to do a lot of converting since its worth quite a few points and packs a big punch. To add some cheap fire power to your list heavy bolter predators can put out a lot of fire power and threaten light transports and troops and land speeder typhoons do the same while having a lot of mobility instead of armor both are less than 100 points and work well when there is more than one.

Sternguard can always be represented by regular space marines you can just paint there helmets a different color to show that they are vets and maybe add some extra purity seals.

Don't add to your assault squad unless your playing blood angles and don't add to your scouts unless your playing space wolves.

Some units you may want to pass on when starting out unless you have a very specific build in mind are

-scouts
-assault squads
-techmarine with servitors
-Whirlwind
-Drop pod
-Thunderfire cannon
-Scout bikers
-Land speeder storm
-Vanguard veterans
-Honor guard
-Legion of the Damned

Some units that have a lot of awesome bits that can be used for other units.

-Command squad
-Captain kit
-Devastator squad
-Venerable dreadnought

These are some good buys to add to your force that can be used in a lot of different lists

-Dark Angels Battle force (lots of decent fast attack and a crap load of extra bits to bling up your other units)
-Assault on Black reach (if you know some one who wants orks this has a lot of solid SM units)
-Space marine battle force (some troops and a rhino are good)
-Land speeder
-Assault terminators
-Razorback
-Predator
-Vindicator
-Tac squad
-Land raider crusader
-Dreadnought

Also check ebay because they usually have a lot of stuff for cheap especially if you play space marines.

Ok what can we make with this:

As a newbie I'd suggest you purchase:

Librarian in Terminator Armour
One more Rhino (preferably razorback so you have option)
Land Raider Crusader or normal land raider
If you have terminator tactical squad get an assault squad conversion kit.
Another Dreadnought so you can have paired dreadnought attack
Predators
