I'm new to tyranids. This is the list I have come up with, Any pointers? I've actually already bought 90% of the models for this list and they are being painted soon so not really looking for radical changes but any advice would be helpful. It comes in at 1990 points so I have a spare 10 points. Not too sure where to put them. I can cough up a further 10 points by making the Trygon primes regular Tyrgons with regeneration and adrenal glands (235 each instead of 240) When I get to playing I'd say i'll swap between those two configurations.

HQ

Hive Tyrant (210)
-Bonesword, Lashwip, Twin linked devourers, Old Adversary

2 Tyrant Guard (120)

Tyranid Prime (120)

Onslaught a Tyrannofex move run shoot 3 Weapons (one is a Poisioned Flamer)
Cluster Spines (its epic seeing peoples faces when you drop 5 Large Templates)
The default weapon is better if you have weak tank spam e.g. rhino spam in your meta.
You do run a lot of Anti-Mech so I prefer the template.

It's a bit more helpful to the OP if you explain reasons behind "I don't like that."

Anyway, to the OP I'd suggest a couple of minor changes. Swap the venom cannon (they can't take a heavy venom cannon) for a barbed strangler. You've got a good amount of anti-tank and venom cannons in either variant are not that hot to begin with. Drop the prime off of one of the trygons and put the Zoeys in Spod. You've got plenty of synapse and the only other thing the prime gets you is a minor upgrade to Ld and a slightly better gun (which you should only use if you deepstrike them, and only on the turn they arrive). The Zoeys Spod means you get to place them precisely where you need them when they become available, as opposed to most likely trying to get into position for a turn or two while getting shot up.

Or, we can talk about the models he actually owns....

Your Hive Tyrant is probably okay, though I prefer Hive Commander to Old Adversary - part of getting Tyranids to work to making use of as many deployment options as you can, and Hive Commander gives you more options. What psychic powers are you planning on?

For variety, try running the Swarmlord occasionally - it's a significant force-multiplier for units like Genestealers, Gargoyles, and even large 'gant/'gaunt broods.

Most of the time, you won't need 2 Tyrant Guard; try running with just 1 (preferably with a lash whip, which would let you skip it on your Tyrant).

I wish your Tervigons had Adrenal Glands & Toxin Sacs - Furious Charge & Poison on newly-created 'gants is actually extremely effective, even against things like Terminators. If you don't want to take the upgrades, then you may not need 2 Tervigons at all - hordes of unmodified 'gants aren't especially effective, except as scoring units, and you can get adequate scoring units as-is.

Most of the time, your Trygons are going to want to deploy normally, and NOT Deep Strike. Seems a little counter-intuitive, but with Fleet, they can usually manage a turn 2 assault; Deep striking, in addition to being unreliable, means no assaulting until turn 3 at best.

I didn't really find that helpful at all.

@Maelstrom808- Thanks for the tips. It was a typo. I did mean venom cannon. So on that point about the barbed strangler... I decided to put in the venom cannon instead of the barber strangler because its only 5 points and would give me reasonably good chances of poping transports (combined with the deathspitters). Its not their ideal role obviously but I thought for 5 points it could come in handy one day. Yes/no?

With the prime, are you allowed to shoot and fleet? I would like to drop pod the zoey's but I don't have a spore so it will have to stay as it is at the moment They are just starting on the board and the general plan was to start everything on the board.

@Janthkin- Um paroxysm and leech essence. Forgot to mention that. I guess in my mind i had never thought about different deployment options. So hive commander seemed a waste. I almost took regeneration instead of Old Adversary too.

I too wanted adrenal glands and toxin sacs on the tervigons. It came down to not having enough points. I guess i can do this though when I play with only one Tyrant guard. The little termagants are really just there for cannon fodder/screening/cover saves.

I did not plan on deep striking my tyrgons, ever, really. Thanks for the input.

On the barbed strangler vs the venom cannon, you are going to have to get a side or rear shot to have any reasonable chance of popping a transport, and if you get that, then the 15x S5 shots from the deathspitters are more than likely going to do the job over the 1 S6 shot (with a -1 to the damage table as well). On top of that, a single shot blast is not the most reliable shot format for killing vehicles. The strangler's large blast on the other hand is great for plopping on large groups of infantry. Combined with the pinning effect, it can be quite handy.

All Fleet allows you to do is be able to assault if you choose to run. If you run you still cannot shoot. As the real strength of the Trygon is in its close combat abilities, you should pretty much always be running with it.

I would add wings to those Tyrants so they can get into combat to use old adversary or give them twin pair of devourers and drop the abilities.

Rest is fine though.
