I was wondering if cow, pigs and other stock animals exsist in the 40000 universe and if the don't what are their replacements?
Also what of the other earth animals are still around. Finnaly are the food that are eaten at all the same?

Thanks for your answers.

No...all everyone needs to eat is the Emporer's shining light!

Seriously though, I think they have all of those animals and many, many more. Human's eat just about everything on this planet and there is no reason to think we wouldn't eat everything we could on other planets.

I think one of them that comes up a lot is called a Grox, which is like a cow...there were those giant cow Beetles in one of the Gaunt novels, I forget their name though.

That being said, I reckon the most common creature in 40k is the humble, disgusting rat! As long as humans exist, so will the rat!

As has been said, the grox. While contemporary livestock might exist, by far and wide, the grox is the standard. During humanity's expansion into the stars, the grox was found to be more resilient to various climates that terrestrial options.

There is references to a food called a 'ploin' in the Ciaphas Cain series (several of them). However, the context of the references confuses me, and I can't figure out if a ploin is a kind of a fish, a fruit/vegetable, or an egg. It's one of those, though, I am pretty sure.

In an old way back in the days of RT era WD there was a background article on the confrontation game that actually gave you an idea of what each section of a hive spire lived like. Included in it was food and I think it's currently up with my kids so don't have it to hand but it went something along the lines of upper spire got food freash and imported from offworld. Obviously being the richest they got what was best and then started going down the anatomy of the hive. At each seperation it was more and more recycled, so immeditely below the top they got the recycled waste from the upper hive (literaly everything recycled) and all the way down where even the dead were recycled into the synthesised food to recover anything of use.
So general citizen unless on a specific agri world I imagine would have some sort of synthesised foodstuff that the diet boffins of the millenium thought led to a healthy balanced nutritious diet. Or one that you could just survive off ofcourse
Still I can see things like stir fried rat being done just because it'd be caught fresh, IG diorama anyone?

I think ploins are like fruits/vegetables.
The Cain series talks a lot about food, if I recall correctly.
But in general I've never heard any particular mention of current livestock from Earth. Though, perhaps their names have been changed! O:

Hi there, I'm an hole! =D

The 'sixty rattles out its song.

Of fireteams dug in on the breaks between the paddyfields, of tracer lasering the jungle night, of Hueys screaming through the void--
Of Lieutenant Castle getting short and hating it, wanting 'Nam to last forever--

Come to sing you to sleep."

A Grox is a particularly large, flatulent, and temperamental version of a modern bovine, from what I can tell.

Orks, of course, eat fungus, squigs, and grots (And probably humans too if they get desperate).

I can't quite remember where I saw it, but I'm sure that Orks think humans taste pretty damn good. Our equivalent of beef, maybe.

A ploin is a fruit, a hybrid fruit or non-terrestrial stonefruit.
Dan Abnett mentions them several times in his novels.

Groxen are large reptilian foul smelling animal used as cattle.

The imperium is much like modern day. Day to day life is like a crap sandwich. The more bread you have, the less crap you have to eat.

Ciaphus Cain talks alot about food, I think I remember him enjoying being attatched to some general for this reason.

Also Coffee is thrown around alot under the guise or 'recaf' IIRC.

Haha! I'd never thought about that...maybe its because the Tau are so tasty to eat...

Also, coffee being called caf or recaf, or whatever really bothered me. I mean come on, there's somethings in 40k that just don't need to be futureified to fit in do they. I mean, a lightbulb being called an electrolumen, or electroflambeaux or whatever is kind of cool. But coffee is just beans!

Well, space beans anyway...
