So i just read blood and iron and that book was full of odd guard regiments. The one that deploys navys onto a planet is pretty kickass. Are there other regiments that do stuff like that? Or any down right bizzare regiments?

I don't think there are many in the fluff of the game, they're supposed to all be seperate regiments, so Infantry or Armour or Artillery, never in the same!

That being said, my regiment, the Screaming Beagles are an experimental combined arms regiment with armor, artillery and infantry, but I wrote the fluff that they are part of a special inquisition made task force and the inquisitor is obviously one of the radical ones, so the Beagles are definitely not codex!

Mostly it was because I wanted the army to have an overall similar look though!

unorthodox regiments like that are cool. i think some more of them should be brought to light. Like the phantine aircorps its the only regiment allowed to use aircraft

Yeah, very true, I loved that name...if it wasn't in a book, I would have ripped it off so hard! Still need a good planet name!

I'm all for that and I play CSM. I think it would be incredibly easy for GW to publish alternative lists/options in WD or on the website. You could do it for essentially every army too. It makes sense for Orks, Chaos, Eldar, Tau, etc. It is an unknown craftworld, or recently revealed sept, and so on. That would increase the overall number of potential army builds without adding the 'dreaded' new army that so many people cry out against.

New regiments are created all the time for the purposes of fiction. A new regiment of Cadians was written into existence for Cadian Blood, for example.

I personally like Savlar Chem-Dogs. A whole army of seedy drug addicts is pretty grimdark.

I really liked the Roane Deepers from Necropolis. I think they should have gotten more credit then they were given. And the Vitrian Dragoons from the first Ghost book, i liked there glass armour, it sounded pretty sweet.

Savlars were awesome when the rules came out and were legal. Ex gangers with chemical control over them via their rebreathers. With mutant lizard rough riders! Had an old west, dirty dozen mixed with cyberpunk feel to it.

well Elysian paratroopers are probably the best-known specialty army...after catachans. They first showed up in a WD around 2003.... I think you have to have alot of guts to play guard without tanks, which is part of their fluff, so A+ to anyone who starts that army.

The scottish warriors in the new codex look pretty ridiculous. They probably kill you with multi-shot bag-pipe lasguns... which would of course be *awesome*

The Salvar Chem Dogs are an old WD guard army that were supposed to be good at fighting in toxic slums. They had some kind of random drug effect that messed with their stats.

Those are the only specialty armies I can think of...

wow.... I always wondered if anyone had actually made a chem dog army. that's really awesome. they were definitely over the top.

Savlar Chem-Dogs weren't "under chemical control". They were sticky-fingered hive gangers pressed into service, who then futzed with their rebreathers to produce buttloads of stimulants.

AbaddonFidelis wrote:Elysian paratroopers

Elysians aren't 'paratroopers'. They're Drop Troopers. They specialize in three differing methods of inserting forces onto the field:
1)Valkyries doing mass drops of grav-chuted troops, light vehicles, and equipment with heavy air assets on call for the drop troopers to designate targets for.
2)Using Valkyries and air support to 'hop' in and out of engagements, ala the US Air Cavalry in Vietnam and having air support(again) on call to deal with the heavy targets.
3)Orbital insertions, utilizing specialized drop pods intended for non-Astartes.

They're called Praetorians. They were a limited edition set of figures (ca 1999 IIRC). You can usually find a couple on EBay every now and then but they can be pricey. Fluff wise it appears they never existed since official pages don't even mention them and no codex that I know of has ever acknowledged their existance. There's even an old IG codex that shows many different IG world troops (at least 20) and not one mention of the Praetorians.

I've always tossed around the idea of modeling Conscripts in my army after the Lost And The Damned mutants from the 13th black crusade. Kind of a mutants fighting for the Emporer or maybe an Imperial dictatorship convincing them that they will be born again normal if they die in the name of the Emprorer. It's always felt grim dark enough to work.

By purchasing an oliphant and some praetorians and converting it yourself, I presume.

Would it be a bad idea to get some mordians, paint them up in Nazi SS colors, and use them as a gang in necromunda?

Kanak Skull Takers. Savages from a death world. Strong; some are Ogryns. Old codex mentions them .Assault troops. Does anyone know of any books with them? I thought of bashing Catachans and Gor plastics.
How do gaurdsmen from death worlds and feudal worlds get trained and led? I never got that.

Oh and Harakoni Warhawks. Another specialist army that focused on grav chute insertion. Their people having a special affinity for it from using them to ride the thermal air currents of their home world. 4th edition imperial guard book I believe.

It would be about as okay as painting redemptionists in KKK colors

To me a wierd and wacky IG regiment are the Tanith Fist And Only, love the books and the storyline. But they have no armour/heavy weapons, thats pretty anti IG.

They do have heavy weapons, mainly rocket launchers and heavy bolters and special weapons would be flamers and sniper rifles.
But yeah they have no armour whatsoever which is pretty anti-IG these days.
