Subject: Trolls - sweet spot number for unit

Was looking over the trolls and was wondering what people think their magic number is?
I was looking between a unit of 8 or 10, with point costs being 360/450 respectively but wasn't sure in a 3k pt game if that was too many points to throw at a unit that is stupid most of the time...

I see most people running trolls in units of 6 in a 3x2 formation. This allows plenty of beat-down while still being maneuverable and a bit less expensive in case they get hosed somehow.
Stupidity isn't a problem if the general and BSB are nearby.

I was thinking either 6 (to run 3-wide) or 8 (to run 4-wide). What formation would you run a unit of 10 in?
I'll be getting a few more boxes of them (using the river troll models for mine) in the next 2 weeks and hopefully starting to get some test games in the coming month, so I'll let you know what I find out . I'll be fielding at least one of my units with Throgg, though!

I really like running them 3x2 or 4x2(or 5 or 7 and throgg). I had a unit of 7 trolls and throgg charge a unit of 36 Saurus and slaughtering enough of them to break their steadfast and run them down.

That's what I'm wondering - what is the break point for the unit? Is 5x2 too big? Can hero's join the unit (besides Throgg of course)? If I can attach a hero, I'd run them 5/7 w/hero - or 3x2/4x2. I've just never played them or against them, so I wasn't sure how long they would actually last on the board or how much protection they would provide the Hero.

A character in a troll unit would not get Look Out Sir.

I've found that anything wider than 3 models is too wide for my battleline (but I play OnG, so I have tons of units, WoC wouldn't have my problem) and that I can't get a 4th model in base to base because most units go for 5-wide frontage (most of my opponents play armies on 20mm bases).
I think that I'd prefer two units of six to a unit of ten. That would let you use them in different locations and ultimately get more attacks in.

I guess I'll have to stick them in the peon units then . . .
Thanks for the discussion!
