I always wanted to take alot of Wild riders and then i read how Orion can make them all core choices!
The downside is, i have to take Orion :(

He has some pretty cool equipment and his Statline is beastly and his model is awesome, so im quite happy with all of it but as always Wood elves being wood elves have some stupid silly way of making themselves pretty bad, Especially when your paying a ton of points to take Orion anyway!

His only form of a save is Forest spirit! which is nice unless there is Magic everywhere!
He doesn't get 'Look out Sir' unless in or nearby to some treekin (as his unit type is monsterous infantry). And if he is in a treekin unit, it reduces his movement by 4..
Also because of being MI when you want to put him in his 'Bodyguard' the wild riders, They lose fast cavalry special rules and essential lose Alot of mobility and speed without free reforms and swiftride.

So my plan was to have Orion in a 3x6 wide unit of Wild riders! as orion takes up 2, i have 15 wild riders and a Wild rider noble with the Dawnspear! because its my favorite weapon and the Razor Standard!
This is obviously some form of a Crude Deathstar unit which we can call Iota Orionis! (the star which is the tip of Orion the hunter's Sword)

Now i can have the Iota Orionis just simply walk 9 every turn so Orion can fire his bolt thrower, and just wait to charge. When he charges he causes 2 panic tests! one from his horn and one from Terror i thought that was pretty cool.
They will only really get to do a head on charge, But i think that is fine as they will cause some serious hurting on anything they charge, And assuming they survive to the next combat phase, They get an extra attack from the Fury of Kuranous!

im also considering two level 2 spellweavers to try and get spells 3-6, as any of these are useful

Now what i really want to know is Tactics! As i didn't want this to be a Build me a list thread

- The Iota Orionis is my basic idea but how can i go about increasing efficiency, or using it effectively. Its already around 1200points for just the unit and i have to play a minimum of 2300pt game. Most likely to be 2500+.
- Anything related to Orion which can be beneficial or not! Need to watch out for things which could get me
- Though Generally I don't see much Warmachine spam, without waywatchers it could be a bit more of a problem.
- Things about Wild riders! anyone had much use with them?

Just stuff like that. I think its just an awesome concept which is too good to pass up on ^_^

Thanks!

I think Orion is fun to use, as are wildriders, but it will be challenging! I've never tried such a large unit. I took an Orion list to a small tourney, and he won the game for me in one, but wasn't so hot in the rest. But he's a big hammer unit, that's for sure! Or, at least as big as the woodies can get .

I'll think about this more and post more thoughts later

I've also been thinking about 'Bait' to use during the hunt :p

A noble on an elven steed with the Horn of Asrai.

He can march up into position on the first turn. Where ever he will be most effective. It depends on the enemy movement.

In the enemy turn he will be sitting anywhere from 10 to probably 17inches away from alot of enemy units and can blow the horn.
If they have a BSB hopefully he isnt in range of everyone, or your facing a Lower LD army ;D
Works best if its a ranged unit that fails the LD test!

Most likely the opponent will fail the charge and his formations will be all messed up if his units are now stuck infront of each other.
In your turn you should be in position to get off some nasty charges.

Potentially awesome tactic though i guess the chance of it happening are quite low. The few games i played with friends though, no one took a BSB

I just liked the idea of having Bait during the hunt!
I'll probably take him anyway ^_^

Wow! I like that idea a lot. Great idea!!

Would he get a vanguard move if put into a unit of glade riders (or even just on his own?). I know the FAQ mentioned elven steeds making our characters fast cav (or something to the effect) so I believe he would.

Excellent, excellent trick. Woodies aren't done yet!!
