Hey, I'm pretty new to Fantasy, I am torn between DE and VC. Now, I play Space Marines in 40K, and I like the elite army idea, but I love the ability to raise hordes of zombies with necromancers. Also, I'm not on to small of a budget but I wouldn't really like to spend more than $250-$300 on an army, if I need to spend more I would. Also, I am not an amazing painter, but I'm not bad. I know that you need hordes of zombies for the VC, but how many zombies do you need in reserve?

So the main thing I'm looking for in the army is:

-Medium sized (Or bigger but not pricey)
-Good Magic
-Not hard to paint
-Nice looking models
-Competitive

I'd like to stick to these two armies, so what army is better in each category.

thanks for the help in advanced,

-Cody

For the categories you listed, I give the edge to:

-Medium sized (Or bigger but not pricey) DE
-Good Magic VC
-Not hard to paint VC
-Nice looking models Toss-up
-Competitive DE

So I have it as a tie. I like some models from both ranges, and abhor others. However, I think you should go with VC. They're interesting and fun in this edition, I think, and not overpowered. DE have some stuff that are over-the-top and will make people complain about playing you, which is never fun when you're just starting out.

A good idea is to maybe get some 3rd party models for ghouls for VC. You can probably save some money and get some good-looking stuff that way! I know Mantic makes some, and they give you one for free (if it ever comes, I signed up but they ship them out in batches, and a lot of people haven't gotten one yet).

Hope this helped

Awesome, I like the models for the VC better, so I think that I'm going to try and get some models, I'll probably get the Battleforce just to beef up my infantry, and I've got a bunch of Skeletons (Is there a difference between skeles and zombies?).

I want to do a mainly necromancy army, but I love Blood Knights, would they fit in there?

Yep, you've got skellies, zombies, and ghouls. And I think you can make a unit of blood knights fit in

Alright, awesome, thanks for the great advice.

Also, what would be good lords and heroes? I was thinking of putting a mounted vampire lord with my blood knights, then have a few necromancers.

VC is an awesome army, but never think you'll get good core infantry out of them without some serious buffs. But, you'll have a whole lot of them and more coming, so who cares? lol

IMO, I would never pay points for Zombies, instead raising them with Necromancers exclusively. Ghouls and Skeletons are MUCH better, Ghouls for their toughness and poisoned attacks, SKeletons for their banners and armor.

And things like Blood Knights, Magic heavy/combat heavy vampires, and Black Guard are VERY much needed in VC as you need the hitting power that you really don't have with your core units.

Good luck to you!

The correct question is, would I be enjoying this hobby if I did this?

The correct audience is you.

Thanks, I have a ton of skeletons, and I'll get even more with the battleforce, along with ghouls and zombies.

How many zombies do you suggest I get? Right now I'll have 40.

Also, do those Lords sound ok? (Vamp lord mounted w/ Blood Knights, 2 necros)

Sounds like a good number of zombies, they're not going to be your bread and butter anymore... just useful for raising them up and blocking things or the like.

The lords sound good! And I'd echo the call for some grave guard, to give you an anvil to go along with your blood knight hammer
