...amazing White Dwarf article that was a battle rep of an Inquisitor game? About a million years ago in the one that introduced Inquisitor? It was so badass, Eisenhorn and his retinue were trying to wake a major daemon and Witch Hunter Tyrus had an imperial force there to stop them. Eisenhorn had the Daemonhost, Slick Devlan and I think Devotee Malicant while Tyrus had Barbaretta, Damien 1427 and Sgt. Stone? That was the first White Dwarf I ever read, and I was 11 years old in my 6th grade classroom when my friend gave me it to read. I'm pretty sure that was the turning point, I haven't stopped loving the 40k universe since...

I got into the hobby through Space Crusade and Hero Quest - given to me and my bro as gifts when they first came out.
Back then, all the aliens were allies; the orks and gretchin would mob you, chaos marines shoot you, and stealers leap out of nowhere and kill you. The androids (necrons?) and dreadnought were the nastiest.
The miniatures were the coolest thing I'd ever seen; especially the dreadnought (ED-209 lookalike).
The rest is history.

I wish I was around (alive? Jokes, you aren't that old) when Space Crusade was. Genestealers were cooler when they stole genes rather than unfailingly rolled 6s to rend my Necron warriors in CC.

That's around the time I stopped buying WD regularly. But it was a good read certainly.

I got an old WD from 2004 - right before 4th edition came out (it even had a coming soon article detailing what was changing!) and it was all about a lovingly converted Imperial Guard paratrooper army fighting an army of converted Speed Freeks. Both armies were owned by the people playing them, and the game was incredible. Really, letting WD staffers use their own personal armies would be so much cooler than using the 'Eavy Metal armies every game. Half the fun of this hobby for me is seeing converted and custom painted armies.

I love how detailed the story is, it's not just a battle report in WD, it's a story.
After getting into it I scavenged WDs from my friends/people I knew for years and I have a collection of some really really old ones. I couldn't understand why they were "introducing" the vampire counts army book hahaha.
That reminds me of another of my favourite battle reps in WD, it was a game for four players where they start with a vampire of one bloodline each and see who wins. The strigoi wtfpwned the Von Carstein early on while Lahmia eventually won by summoning two full regiments of zombies
