Dear Dakka Dakka,

I have a question about characters and challenges. First, I'm building a unit that is 25 Phoenix Guard and has full command, Caradryan, and a Noble with the BSB, and Teclis. I have my reasons for such an expensive unit, but I would like your thoughts on some rule interpretations.

So, per the BRB, pg.97, Position in a Unit, paraphrased, it says that characters are placed in the front rank when they join a unit. Rank and file models are moved to the back rank except for the command models. If there is no more room for the characters in the front rank they they are placed in the second rank.

So, if I have full command, Caradryan, and the BSB on the front rank, then legally I can put Teclis in the second rank.

Here's where my question comes in.

If an opponent issues a challenge and I accept it all that happens is the two models are put into base contact with each other, while still remaining in the unit, right? So, Teclis wouldn't have to move out of the second rank.

If for whatever ever reason I refuse a challenge, can Teclis be sent to the back from the second rank? Or if Caradryan is sent to the back does Teclis take his spot on the front rank? Or does a rank and file take his place?

BRB, pg. 102, Refusing a Challenge, just says, "another model will step up and fight in his place, just as if he'd been slain."

Also, if Teclis is in the second rank he can't be targeted by CC attacks, right? Because no one is in base contact with him. But, he can do his single attack as a supporting attack.

Thoughts?

1. Yes, if you accept with one of the models on the front rank nothing happens to teclis. He stays on the second rank.

2. If you refuse a challenge your OPPONENT chooses the model to be sent to the back. So if he sends Caradryan, BSB etc to the back then teclis would move to the front, as he has to be placed on the front rank if possible. So dont refuse the challenge

3. If Teclis is in the second rank he cant be targetted.
