I've been working on an initial list for my Thousand Sons army, 1000pts is very restrictive but seems like the most sensible option for an initial force (anything lower would be comically small). This army is pretty much set in stone as I have all the models needed aside from the Rhinos. With this army I've been trying to come up with something that feels like a Thousand Sons list and yet fulfils the need to have access to both decent shooting and close combat. So with that in mind here's the list.

HQ:

Daemon Prince: Mark of Tzeench, Wings, Bolt of Change, Warp Time

200pts

Troops:

Thousand Sons: x8, Aspiring Sorcerer, Bolt of Change, Rhino (Dozer Blade, Havok Launcher)

324pts

Thousand Sons: x8, Aspiring Sorcerer, Bolt of Change, Rhino (Dozer Blade, Havok Launcher)

324pts

Heavy Support:

Defilier: Close Combat Arm

150pts

Total: 998pts

Are there any glaring flaws in this list or is it acceptable as it stands?

When I come to expand this army (ideally in 500pt chunks) I'll almost certainty add a terminator squad mounted in a Land Raider as it's first elite choice which should boost both the anti tank and combat abilities of the army. Beyond that and extra squads of Thousand Sons I'm not sure where to go. The area that's giving me the most problems is Fast Attack, neither the Bikes or Raptors seem to be appropriate for a Thousand Sons army (although from a modelling point of view Raptors made using feathered wings instead of jump packs and Thousand Sons pieces are appealing). Any advice in this area would be greatly appreciated.

I personally am not a fan of BoC but i think it is fine on a DP. Reason being is you have to roll psychic test, then roll to hit, then roll to wound or penetrate, last roll for vehicle damage. To me it is just to many oppurtunities to roll a 1. For Asp. Sorc. i prefer either WoC or doombolt for cheapness. I also dont particularly like kitted out rhinos either. If anything i would say just the havoc launcher is good enough.
To further your 1k sons army termies and LR are good fun. Another addition to your army that fits the 1k sons theme is Preds. As for FA option the only one that really fits are spawn..... i know waste so just go with the raptors anyhow as it sounds like a cool idea.

Thanks, that's just the sort of advice I was after.

The change from BoC to WoC and dropping the dozer blades from the Rhinos keeps the army points total at 998 and gives the TS squads a nice close range weapon should anything get too close.

Yeah I'm going to pretty much ignore spawn unless I can't find any other way to fill 40pts in the list which is very unlikely.

The lists looks ok.
There is an issue with Anti-Transports, but BoC is not the economical answer.

I would suggest the AC/LC pred instead of the Defiler though or some Oblits, but the Defiler serves a much better bullet magnet than the rhinos.

Wind is a good suggestion because it gets around the whole cover issue for Inferno Bolts.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I agree with the others about taking wind of chaos or doombolt on the champions. I'd say a possessed vindicator is scarier than a defiler, but whatever. You can save about 50 points by losing the dozer blades and downgrading the psychic powers. Maybe take out 4 thousand sons as well, and take another HS choice. An AC/LC predator would be good.

Overall, list is ok - but with thousand sons, at this point level, you're kind of boned if you fetch up against any non-marine list.

I did consider an AC/LC pred or Vindicator instead of the Defiler but I sided with the Defiler since in addition to some anti tank ability it also performs pretty well in close combat which is something sorely lacking in a Thousand Sons army.

I don't particularly like the concept behind Oblits (it doesn't help that the models are hideous) and I don't really feel that they're suitable in a Thousand Sons army.

I'll do a bit of number crunching though and see if I can fit anything in by down grading to the Aspiring Sorcerers' powers to doombolt and using a few less Thousand Sons.

EDIT:

Ok here's a quick revised list:

HQ:

Daemon Prince: Mark of Tzeench, Wings, Bolt of Change, Warp Time 200pts

Troops:

Thousand Sons: x6, Aspiring Sorcerer, Doombolt, Rhino (Havok Launcher) 258pts

Thousand Sons: x6, Aspiring Sorcerer, Doombolt, Rhino (Havok Launcher) 258pts

Heavy Support:

Defiler: Close Combat Arm 150pts

Predator: Las Cannon sponsons 130pts

Total: 996pts

My only concern with this list would be the fragility of the Thousand Sons squads, 7 (inc Sorc) seems a bit low for my liking.

They die just like SMs. The difference is they suck like you said in HtH. I would say you were much better off with the first list rather than this one. What you ought to do is playtest with different heavy support and see what works well for you.
