An IG blob squad assaults multiple units and is still in coherency via congo line. The following turn more units assault the blob. I'll try to show the scenario. The X's are the guard and after the initial assault the IG squad is separated into two groups 8-10" or so apart. Below is our next assault phase when units B, C and E join the fray.

AB-----------------------------CD
AAXXB------------------------CXXDD
AXXBB------------------------CXXDD
AXXBB------------------------CXXD
AXXE--------------------------CXD

After our assault it looks like this.

AB---------------------------CD
AXB-------------------------C DD
AXBB-----------------------C DD
BB---------------------------C D
E------------------------------D

The whole right side of his unit is wiped and neither unit C or D can get into BtB on a pile-in move because they are 8-9" away, do C and D consolidate normally or are they forced to move as far as possible towards the remaining IG? There was a big discussion because it was late game and unit D on a normal consolidation could take an objective that was 4" or so farther away from the remaining IG. We played that they could consolidate because it was impossible for them to make it into BtB. Was this correct?

If they cannot possibly maintain BtB contact, even with pilein, they are no longer locked in combat and would consolidate normally.

Thanks for the replies.

As a follow-up, the IG that are completely surrounded, in my second diagram, cannot make a pile-in move out of BtB with A, B and E to force me to pile in with C and D, can they? As you can tell, they were fairly desperate to keep us away from the objective. I was torn, this was a team match and my son was the IG's teammate.

Thanks again in advance.

You cannot pile in OUT of btb; anyone in btb is stuck there and cannot move.

Yep, only models not in btb get to make a pile-in move. First paragraph of Pile-In! page 40, main rules.
