I'm considering adding 1 to my Inquisitor lord. is it worth the 30 point price tag?
his retinue will have 3 plasma vets, so a shooty retinue. but that seems like a steep
price tag.
thoughts?

Depends on what power you are buying for your IL. If Scourging then i say it is up to you whether or not to. If not then it is definitely a good buy for him IMO.

I can't say anything about their quality, but the fact that I've seen one in basically every single inquisitor retinue I've ever seen means they can't be TOO bad.

on a dedicated dakkaquisitor maybe. good for anti DS. 3 Heavy bolter servitors and a psycannon can really hurt some daemons/assault marines

with plasma though you'll either be 12-24" away shooting or <12" away. either way it either shortens the reach of the heavy option or makes you an easy assault target

Oh, also I should note that I've always seen psycannons taken with heavy weapons. For example, abusing demons with psycannon+2 or more heavy bolters or shredding deepstrikers with a mystic, a psycannon and 2 plasma cannons.

I can't imagine a psycannon would be all that great of a pairing with a plasma GUN inquisitor loadout.

Yeah, Inquisitor retinues built for CC are terrible. Psycannons are great... against invulnerable saves. Sisters, Daemons etc don't like them

Son can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes...

Exactly, if you psycannon ghaz while hes on the waaagh, he gets no save at all, as he doesnt gain a 2+ invul, his armor save becomes invulnerable.

What else is in your list?

The primary reason to run a psycannon is if fate crusher is popular in your area. Psycannon + psyker battle squad punks fateweaver rather fast.

If you have enough multi lasers or large combined squad platoons to first rank second rank you might not need the psy cannon to kill fateweaver since torrent of fire will put a wound on him.

Psycannon is probably not worth it if the rest of your squad is plasma vets because your opponent might be able to stack ap2 wounds.

When I do take a psycannon I usually take the inquisitor with psycannon, tarot, 2 mystics a sage. They commandeer a chimera from somebody and sit and fire out of it.

If you have elite slots free what you can do is take a DH Inquisitor with the psycannon and 2 mystics with tarot and then take a WH inquitor with 3 plasma warriors. Does require you to have vehicles free to commander but then you can have both psy cannon and plasma warriors.

I find Psycannons blow up my Eldar nicely. My opponent's Grey Knights seem to pack one in evry squad, and last game they caught my Farseer out in the open after ripping through my squad of Dire Avengers. Then they found out the power of Kroot Mercenaries...

Probably work

Psycannons are pretty much worth it whenever you deal with anything with bad armor and an invul save. Most Xenos armies have large amounts of things vulnerable to them, IG HQs, another Inquisitor, Daemons. That's about the majority of it. It's a great weapon if you have a hole for it in general though. I like Inquisitor with terminator armor with a psycannon and a warrior retinue with 3 plasmaguns, but I don't run that with IG, so your mileage may vary. I did like them enough to order the 5 pack terminator arm set offered by GW though.
