So I was reading over the Purple Sun of Xerxes the other day and came across something interesting.

Is it true that the Stank is Insta-Killed by the Purple Sun? The Purple Sun states, "the affected units must take an Init test and if failed is slain outright with no armor saves of any kind allowed" and under the Stank rules under Characteristics tests it says, "the Stank automatically fails Init tests as its not to good at dodging".

So does that mean that ONE Purple Sun can Insta-Kill a Stank or potentially multiple Stanks depending on how close they are to each other.

It would seem so but that seems WAY to good so I ask dakka!

Thanks!

It works, you've pretty much said it yourself. Purple Sun requires an initiative test, stank fails all initiative tests. What more is there to it?

Beware saying such things makes people to claim stuff broken and discusting.

On topic, you are indeed correct.

The Purple Sun kills all siege engines outright.

So does Pit of Shades similarly own the steam tank provided it doesn't scatter off of the steam tank?

No, it is immune to pit of shades, per the FAQ.

Wonder why they chose that spell to make it immune to.

Cuz GW love randomness.
And thus made a random decision

Because a d6 said so!

Because the former Empire FAQ said so and they just copy and pasted. Really though too many things can instant kill a Steam Tank now. It is a sad thing, IMHO.

Agreed!

It is rather sad, but it did have, what, a whole 3 or 4 days of increased popularity?

Around that, and I'm sure GW intentionally made the FAQ's that way.

I assume you're being facetious Karon. If you were going to try to artificially boost sales, wouldn't you leave the window open for more than 3-4 days?

A steam tank is not a war machine, just as a quibble.

I built my 'ardboyz list and didn't take a steam tank. I think they were marginally worth it at that points level in the past, but not any more, given steadfast. Really has nothing to do with toughness or magic immunity. YMMV

Except there's no actual rules which support this ruling.

The question is out-of-date. The FAQ question-and-answer "does pit of shades work on it" was from when steam tanks had a special rule "immune to magic spells without a strength characteristic" which the FAQ-update deleted.

Thus it's a question-and-answer about something which does not exist.

The ERRATA (actual rules creation) made it so Pit of Shades does work against steam tanks.

Of course, Empire players are gonna be slowed and claim their tank which has no magic-immunity is somehow immune until GW actually cleans up their badly written FAQs.

The differentiation between FAQ's not being rules is gone from the Fantasy FAQ's.

That's an unfortunate consequence of RAW. I think that's pretty silly that Purple Sun works but per RAW FAQ Pit of Shades doesn't when they essentially do the same thing. =/ /sad panda

It's likely an oversite, but it still is the rules.

As an empire player, I say that I'll take immunity to pit of shades until GW explains why they found it necessary to add a stat line for the engineer in the steam tank. I can't see any reason really. I am thiniking maybe its supposed to take tests like other charriots? When I called the support line (I know highly unreliable but I like to screw with them with hard questions just for the fun of it) they told me that the engineer actually gets to fight in hth.
