Hi Dakka!

Game last night that raised a few eyebrows - want some clarification!

I was playing a CSM opponent and we had rolled off for Scenario and deployment. We had selected "Annihilate" + "Pitched Battle". My opponent won the roll-off for first turn, and asked me to set up, which I did. When it came to his set up, he then stated that he was placing everything in reserve.

I questioned this, saying that the rules for "Pitched Battle" state that both armies have to be deployed on the field, but he countered this saying that the reserve option was always available no matter the scenario. Is this right? I was a bit miffed about it, as on turn two (when my vast array of heavy weapons still had nothing to shoot at), three defilers walk on from the most distant corner of the table (his table edge), and make a complete mess of what I had on the table. Because I had essentially been moving my forces "forward" i.e. having nothing else to aim for, I was heavily caught off guard.

If this is a legal rule, then i'll hold my hands up to this one and admit I got whooped - but i'd like an opinion on this one!

Second question (simpler!)

Can a Defiler take Daemonic posession? My opponent did not have his codex with him.

Many Thanks!

1) Yes, it's perfectly legal. The reserves rule lets you place as much of your army in reserves as you want.
2) Check the codex. Sorry. Not trying to be mean, trying to stop the GW Attack Pandas killing us.

So even though it specifically says in "Pitched Battle" that both armies MUST set up, this is allowed? I assumed that the reserves special rule was in place to explain what happened in scenarios using the reserves rule.

Declaring how you are deploying your forces is part of set up.

It doesn't say "must" in the pitched battle rules. In fact, it is only in dawn of war deployment that units that were not placed on the table or in reserve 'must' enter in the movement phase f each player's first turn.

Also, look at the first paragraph on page 94, BRB. The 'reserves' and 'deep strike' mission special rules can be used in all standard missions.

@jaon - that made me lol

I guess this is a fair enough explanation, It was just soul destroying to have 16 terminators and 1 full assault squad wiped out in the space of a minute. Time for a tactical rethink I guess...
