Meh, the black library is just glorified fan fiction. None of it's canon anyways.

Just because it's "real" to someone who wrote a novel doesn't mean it needs to be "real" to you.

This is perfectly useless given that the guy hasn't been employed with the Black Library for almost two years now, from everything I've been told.

The fact that he's had no real new publications seems to confirm that, outside of a short story(which was reputedly handed in for a 2008 release but was a bit too lengthy for where it would have been) and some rejigging of some of his earlier released works supports that.

Eldar Prophecy was published 2007, which is more than 2 years from now. Am not aware of any new stuff by him either. And for a reason, he is not listed as a BL author on their website: http://www.blacklibrary.com/Authors .
Let's read Gav Thorpes Eldar novels and forget the grim past, when we only had Goto writing Eldar stuff.

For example I know a great deal of video games like Left for Dead 2 that werent bothered at all by threats of petitions and boycotts

He's mentioned on their list for legal purposes.

With Black Library being required to print his material for a set amount of time, they can't just publish it without crediting him. That would be...y'know, illegal.
His profile is the same one that was on the original Black Library site, with no photo or any other contact information.

I thought he wasn't bad stylistically. To be honest, the way he writes strikes me as a lot more fluid and readable than Dan Abnett's approach of

The only complaint people seem to have about C.S. Goto is that he makes a mess of canonistical fluff. An Eldar Guardian leader chick with an honorary diresword, while nonexistant in the game is perfectly legitimate in fiction because, well, direswords exists, and so do guardians in that universe. The same, in my opinion goes for Marines hauling multilasers. They both inhabit the same fantasy universe, so whats to stop them from picking up multilasers?

Nobody complains about Eisenhorn's bodyguard guy lugging around an autocannon, or Gaunt's XO using flamer fuel tanks as explosives, or the squad of 5 Guardsmen in "15 hours", or Mkoll taking out a chaos dread, or Ciaphas Cain running around with a meltagun. What's the difference? At least Goto isn't always like a read from the script to a bad action movie.

I'm afraid I must disagree. Goto may not write bad action movie-esque fiction, but what he does write is a great deal worse, in my opinion. It's essentially a mix of terrible fluff (though you make a good point about that, actually) and unbelievably ridiculous action, i.e Razorback surfing.

Touche on the razorback surfing idea. Okay so his ideas are completely bonkers, but the way he writes them is at least a bit more artistic.

I'm not talking content I'm talking style.

Mark Twain and Kurt Vonnegut wrote some pretty absurd stuff too, but wrote it well, and so it became 'literature' instead of pulp fiction. When it comes down to it, they had it easy because they could write in a vacuum, whereas by writing for the BL an author has to at least come close to GW fluff and a restricted universe of where their imagination is allowed to go. Most book or movie series I have read that are set in a preconcieved universe from some kind of game or movie (the Star Wars novels, the Lara Croft chronicles, Resident Evil movies, Star Trek books, and so on...) most of them have all SUCKED because the author is restricted in subject and scope, and can't just use his own imagination. If he did, we'd have captain Kirk piloting a Land Raider into a pile of Orks, with an Ewok for a co-pilot and Lara Croft riding in the back with Indiana Jones, etc.
It sucks trying to write in a fixed universe and play by all the rules of that universe. So Goto goes out on a limb a bit. Whether it's good story ideas or bad story ideas is a matter of personal taste, but at least the guy tries to get imaginative with stuff. For that I give him credit.

"And then inquisitor Eisenhorn turned the next corner, and there were more cultists. And then he reached for his bolt pistol. And then before he could draw it, his bodyguard appeared at the far end of the corridor, autocannon blazing. And then, the cultists flew apart in bloody smears all over the wall. And then he said "thanks" to his trusted friend. And then his friend said "no problem boss". And then they went down the corridor together. And then..."

-yeah no thanks Abnett, I'll stick to Goto and his crazy ideas. Better yet, I'll just read Ciaphas Cain if I want my 40k fiction fix. Everybody loves that guy. If I want interesting style I will go back to finishing the entire works of Twain or Bukowski or Vonnegut. I guess we shouldn't really be looking for artistic writing in pulp genre fiction in the first place, but you can't fault the guy for trying.

C.S. Goto's work is generally capitalized and punctuated correctly at least.
