Hey,

I'm looking to get back into guard having played games now and knowing how to use them.

But I've heard rumors that Storm Troopers aren't worth fielding. This is the only reason I would play as Cadians over Vostroyans, is Kaskrins and Storm Troopers are used by Cadians.

Is this true that they aren't?

To answer your question, at this point no their not worth it. The reason they aren't is because of veterans now being troops choices and being able to take up to 3 special weapons. In the old Guard Codex it was better to take Stormtroopers because they gave you BS 4 with a 4+ armor save without having to buy that doctrine that upgraded their save, and because they were Elites just like Veterans you would easily have chosen them, basically points wise they were the better choice.

Now, however, thats changed. Veterans are only 70pts initially but for 160pts you get: Sergeant with Power Fist and Plasma Pistol, 3 Meltaguns, Vox Caster, and Carapace armor (which they can now take), plus their BS 4.

Now if we look at Stormtroopers their 85pts initially and for 205pts you get: Sergeant with Power Weapon (yes they can't even take Power Fists) and Plasma Pistol, 2 Meltaguns and thats it because you have to pay for 5 extra Stormtroopers. The only benefit you get from the Stormtroopers is the Special Operations, where you can either give them Scout and Move through Cover, reroll scatter on deepstrike (useful if your deploying them out of a Valkyrie or Vendetta), or Infiltrate and Pinning the first time they fire.

Personally I would like to try and make a list that uses Stormtroopers because I think they are one of the coolest units that guard has and they do add extra Meltaguns to your army, but this list wouldn't be competitive for 205pts there are to many other things you could take which would give you far more use in an Imperial Guard army.

Thanks for the great answer, I agree they are the Guards coolest model. I'll probably go with Vostroyans because I don't want to make a huge IG army, and it seems like using one unit as 1/5 of your army isn't very logical

Imo they arent that good. as a suicide unit, maybe but that'll depend on if they can deep strike close enough on their target. inquisition storms or vets have them beat

I'm going to just run a veteran Vostroyan army. I dislike the Cadian models just because they feel bland to me :/

Thanks for the advice.

so, stormies are one of a marginal group of "certain circumstance" units. By this I mean, there is a role(s) for them, but they're kind of niche, and, in this case, pretty expensive for what they do. This is not dissimilar to ogryn or executioners or sentinels, or techpriests. It's not fair to say "never" take them, but it definitely isn't something that you're always going to want to throw in just for the hell of it (like, say a basilisk or a manticore or a hellhound).

stormies basically have two roles: catching 3+ armor out in the open, and using "pin point" accuracy to suicide drop a pair of BS4 special weapons somewhere through deepstrike. I've seen it done before.

If you don't have a need for this, then yeah, there's not a whole lot of point in taking them. Otherwise, with a little work, they can be shoehorned into a list if you're willing to make the points commitment.

TBH, I'd rather spend the points on another Vet Squad or a good ol' Russ

I think it would be kind of hard to fit them in my army style I'm planning on.

I have a squad of them around. Their models are cool and I spent a lot of time painting them, so I might as well use em!

Would I use them in a tournament though? That's up in the air.

Oh, it should also be noted that stormies are one of two non-vehicular imperial guard units that don't just get horribly slaughtered by bolters when out in the open. Once again a pretty niche thing (that is usually handled by mass numbers or by putting dudes in chimeras), but it IS a guard squad that can drop in and take out a rhino, survive the angry occupant's bolter fire and then kill a chunk of the cargo.

I have to disagree with that airlaros. Once, using creed, I outflanked 10 storm troopers (sadly they had a flamer and a grenade launcher, which makes them worse) Right next to a bunch of necron warriors. They rapid fired, and killed 2 necrons. now i think the average is 3, but either way, 16 ap 3 shots at bs4 would be awesome, but the str 3 kills the unit.

Lets look into a a certain scenario. we have 10 chaos marines with bolters, and 10 storm troopers with hot shots.

Because of the lowered strength of weapon, and lowered toughness and armour save, storm troopers equal out to be almost exactly the same effectiveness as space marines are when versing each other.

So its a matter of who fires first, so you better count on that rhino doing more damage than the angry bolter fire, because you cant win otherwise.

Why would you use Creed to outflank stormtroopers when they already have that ability on their own? Paying points to downgrade your weapons is your own problem. Anyway, throwing them against regular line squads is not a good use for them. You use their special deployment to ambush specialist units. Pop up out of nowhere and light up a devastator squad or whirlwhind or something.

Still not the sort of thing you should depend on, and pretty expensive for a throwaway.

For their cost, no, they're definitely not worth it, however i've used them before and they have their uses

1500pts: Mechanised Guard
2500pts: Artillery Line
