Havent bought a mat but I'm thinking that a spraypaint will crack over time and start to flake off same would happen with drybrushing.

This is unless you have some spray paint that is designed to be used on a flexible surface.

Deejaybainbridge has one and we play on it every week. I don't think it'd work, I'm sorry to say. Something to do with the material. You maybe could bleach it and dye it ochre with some dedicated fabric dye though. Quite a dark green so you'd definitely have to bleach it first.

MAybe see if any other companies do one. Probably be cheaper if they do. I also reckon it'd be cheaper to just buy a 6 by 4 mdf board or something and just spray/flock it yourself. Not as portable, I admit, but does it need to be dude?

Am thinking about getting a battle mat myself for flexibility if you will forgive the pun.
Quite simply a 6'x4' board is going to be tricky to use in my pokey gaff. Also can take it to use at the library club if needs must.

Would be interested to know if there are chjeaper alternatives, or if it would be worth flocking some canvas.

Note that BOW discussed this on their table making video and they reckon paper backed grassmats are not worth the hassle and the investment in the GW is a good one.

I hear that. My place is tiny but I was thinking of getting a board and just standing it up behind the tv for storage.

I like yr idea of flocing some canvass. It might need regular touching up but it'd certainly be a good cheap alternative. You can get flock pretty cheap from the model shop near me. I bought a bag last year for 99p and I've flocked about 100 model bases (varying size) and 3 scenery bases and still have quite a bit left so it's pretty good value.

I have some hardboard in 2x4' pieces which I intended to cradle to prevent warping. That would allow the three boards to be placed together, then stacked for storage.
A quick mock up before starting showed that there was just about enough space on the floor for a 6x4 setup, but that left no room for moving around the boards!

Also it was uncomfortably close to the fire for winter gaming and would have ruled out the use of plastic models
Luckily I have a 5x3 drop leaf table which just about suffices for small games.

For the love of god use some punctuation and capitalization. Not having a single period or comma in there makes it seem like you're talking a mile a minute. Don't tell people to "comment back" either - this is a forum, they'll reply if they want to.

On topic, this wouldn't work. The battlemat is a flocked mat with static grass and stuff. If I were you I'd just buy a 4x6 board of wood, fiberboard, or what have you, and just spray that the color you want.

Dunno. I know GW does them by hand. They actually paint on the base coat with a giant brush.

I have 2x2 mdf boards with the foam installation glued to to it in the shape of hills. So we can mix and match the foam boards. You just have to store the vertically instead of stacked horizontally to avoid warp, even with the MDF as a base.
