I currently have two and a half squads of Vanilla Tacticals done up in a scheme I never used or really liked. I'm starting a Space Wolves list. I have no Space Wolves models. I know I'll need to get some, but if I can figure out a way to turn Vanilla Tacticals into SW Grey Hunters, it'll save a bunch of money.

The part I'm most concerned about is the aquila - which, if I'm seeing the models correctly, Grey Hunters don't have.

Any advice in general would be appreciated.

one thing i can think of is buying the bits from eBay or some other bits sites. it will cost you some cash, but i dont think it will cost you a fortune, otherwise, some GS is in order, all depends on how skilled you are with it.

There's no problem having an aquila for Grey Hunters. They're still Space Marines, and they still revere the Emperor. The old Space Wolves sprue was nowhere near as all-encompassing as the current one, so it wasn't uncommon for 3rd/4th ed Wolf armies to have lots of vanilla Marines with just a wolf tail or Space Wolves head. If I were you I'd get the new Wolf pack, build the 10 dudes in it, and distribute the leftover bits (of which there are a ton) across all your other models.

Buy the Space Wolves accessory frame and go crazy with it.
