I know this has probably been talked about to death but I want to ask anyways. What do you think of Forge World Rules? Do you use them? Do/Would you allow your opponent to use them? If you do run them, how do opponents react? How do your FW selections fare in battle?

I must say after flipping through the lists/units, they are interesting. the 2 problem I see is they're either 1. Not too competitive with the newest codecies or 2. Almost complete upgrades of certain lists/units. Still they do add quite a bit of flavor and sometimes are good enough to warrant codex entires (like a good deal of the imperial guard codex)

thoughts?

Well I think the FW rules are very well put-together, they provide much more clarification than the standard GW rules. Personally, I would always allow FW rules: they have spent time and money creating them, just like I did on mine, and it wouldn't be right to turn them away simply because of fears that FW rules are overpowered, which they simply are not.

I'm thinking about this, too.
I've builld up / I'm building up a Death Korps army and I'd rather play them with the army list from Forgeworld than the Codex IG. The people I'll play with don't seem to have a problem with that but I think if I'd attend a turnament, they'll most likely ban the FW rules, right?

As for "overpowered", they are not. Ok, DK might have WS 4 and the special rules are quite good, too. But they lack the flexibility of a Codex IG army - and some of the items like Chimeras ...
I'm mostly annoyed about FW deleting the complete armoury. No master-vox, no medals, no refractor field, ...

But I gues what you ment were rules for one special unit / vehicle. Well, like Valkyre said, I think they put a lot of thoughts into their rules so I think they are good balanced and not overpowered, so I wouldn't see a problem with using these rules.

But then there are the people who think (no, fear) that because FW models are quite pricey they have to be really badass in the game, too. Everyone who has some FW miniatures knows that you pay for the quality of the models and not for the rules.

And: On the books is - of course - the logo of Games Workshop. So you can alway argue with FW rules being official GW rules, too.

Three words:
Caestus Assault Ram.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'd love two-three for my Ultramarines, but who wouldn't? AV13 meltaproof fast skimmer with a 36" flat-out move, as well as a melta blast cannon and free extra armor.
Oh yea, it also can deliver 10 terminators, is an assault vehicle, and costs less than a land raider.

Now imagine it with Spearhead rules. Oh yes, oh yes.

EDIT: By that I mean I have no issues with my opponent using FW rules as long as I got to look them over first, of course.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

for the most part FW rules are under-powered.

95% of the items are overcosted for the simple reason that they don't want them to be overpowered.

the people who don't play against FW rules for the simple reason that they "arn't GW" is silly.

you paid good money for a really nice mini because you wanted a quality product and by the Emperor you should be able to use it.

i think most people who don't play against FW models are simply jealous that they don't have any.

my biggest peave is when peopl won't even play against a FW version of a GW product that uses the same rules, but is just cooler.

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

True. 40k is a beefy investment. FW even more! books alone cost as much as a rulebook if you're an honorable consumer

now thats crazyness

anyways though it kinda sucks that necrons and DE get the really short end of the stick from FW. hopefully they'll get some new stuff soon. I mean while as said many things are meh or overpriced, they certainly add in flavor! Like XV9's, Chaos Renegades (who use modified old guard rules even when updated), and a Biker Warboss who's cheaper pointwise than Wazdakka who tankshocks peeps and strikes at initiative with a klaw!
