Wrong forum. AP works like this: if the AP value (say '5') is greater than the Sv value of a model wounded by that particular ranged weapon, then that model saves the wound on a 1D6 roll of that Sv or greater. So a Sv3+ vs AP5 will save iff the defending player rolls 3, 4, 5, 6 on 1D6. If the AP is equal or less, however, no Sv is allowed, although the player may still have the options of Cover saves (Cv) or Invulnerable saves (Iv). In addition AP values '-' and '1' may affect rolls on vehicle damage charts.
