Subject: 510 Point Game: Help with Tactics?

Blood Angel Neophyte Undergoing Surgeries

So, I got a friend of mine into playing 40k. Sweet business, except he dislikes using my units to proxy in, so we're limited to small games.
Oh, and he's Necrons. In any case, I love my leetle itty bitty guardsmen, but sweet Jesus do those Gauss weapons carve them up. So here's my request: Help me not suck?
Here's what I'm up against: A Necron Lord, sixteen Warriors, a Heavy Destroyer, and some Scarabs he always deep-strikes. He hasn't been using the Veil of Darkness or the Orb of Resurrection much, but he might do that, and opt for a warrior or two less. As far as tactics go, he tends to either sit back and wait for me, or Veil of Darkness next to my troops and Rapid Fire them. If he's waiting, he snipes with his Destroyer and sends Scarabs in, and even if he's veiling in, he throws everything at me at more or less the same time.
Normally I end up running either: Two Melta-abusing Deep-striking Stormtroops, Yarrick, and Marbo; A ton of normal infantry squads and Marbo; or a heavy LRBT and some infantry support... oh, and Marbo. I'm not exactly limited in my options, but I'd like to widen them up just a little bit anyway, so I was wondering: What do you guys think I can do to annihilate those Necrons?

Well I can tell you now Yarrick is a waste of points. Really. Horribly overpriced for what he does.
But! Here's what you do. Make sure your standard infantry units are either in cover (so they get a save against rapid firing gauss) OR spread them out to max coherency, attempting to making him scatter onto something and die.
Next, you take Vehicles. Preferably MORE than one LRBT if you have the points (you really don't want that many infantry against Necrons, unless you plan to blob them up with power weapons and assault him, which isn't a HORRIBLE idea, actually. Make sure you have a Commissar somewhere in the squad if you do) With your infantry safe from VoD rapid fire, and with a 72" pieplate he doesn't get armor saves against, you can force him to come to you. Pop that Heavy Destroyer early, since there is only one if you kill it he doesn't get We'll Be Back. With that gone he can only glance your vehicles, at which point your Battle Cannons should wipe face against anything else he can throw against you.
Your melta abusing storm troopers are not needed against his Necron list (no Monolith) so you could drop them as they are of no help to you here.

Sounds like a good plan. I only have one Battle Tank, so there's that... I actually did blob up a thirty-man squad before, with a Commissar, but they kinda got down to six guys right before they were going to assault. Nasty business.
What about Ratlings? How would they fare?

Ratling are almost useless...
In any game really.
I'd go with what he said, either super-blob with power weapons (meltas too but power weapons are more improtant) and charge on in with LRBTs giving cover.
Another idea could be to suicide in the hellhound that has the AP3 flamer, although that's kinda dicey, since Necrons can glance it to death.
If he doesn't use cover, then blob your squads in back with Missile Launchers and Krak them to death and a LRBT if you want.
That kinda wouldn't work if he uses a Res Orb though, in which case charging with Power Weapons and LRBTs would be best.

there are two good ways to handle this. The first way is to bring some large blast ordnance. A couple of basilisks will set your opponent straight. The second way is to throw him off the board in a sweeping advance which requires power blobs

I'm actually agreeing with Ailaros on this one. Necrons really hate AP blasts and power weapon assaults more than anything else. Marbo is also pretty good though. Some HWTs like missile launchers or lascannons are also a good way to take out destroyers early on.

Alright, sooo... I'm thinking then I might just go with a LRBT, a Heavy Weapons Squad with Lascannons, and use the rest of my points for blobbing up infantry.
Thank you!
