It have a pair of shell that looks like airplane wings. I imagine it must be cumbersome since its solid and cant bend or flap or fold at all.
Its wing is just underneath the shell , and opens like... X Wing from star wars.

Im trying to make sense how those wing shell work.

What an amazing wee beastie!
wonder if the fixed wings give lift so it can carry on the wind. Would be useful for energy saving travel.
Looks like some sort of cranefly but afaik we don't have that species in Britain.

The arrangement of the legs is totally different too, Flashman.

Looks like a plume moth... the 'hairs' on the legs and the head are moth-like. Can you get a shot with the wings out, or better detail of the rear abdomen? Many stick insects can fly.

Saw a really beautiful white moth that was similar.
However from the pics and descripition the wings are encased which suugests that it is not a moth.
Also rule out cranefly too

That bug looks awesome. I'm keen to find out what it is as well, the only purpose I can think of for that wide shell is to appear to birds as a stick... or maybe just be too damn annoying for the birds to eat.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. More likely it's to attract mates with the awesomness of thier 'thingies'. Many bizzare bodyparts on creature have evolved just as a selection tool to prove thier worth as a potential parent.
Agreed, it it rather cool though!

~B) Moth-headed hexapod = moth. Butterflies all have four 'normal' wings. I'm 99% sure it's a plume moth, but might be wrong on the genus.

seb is more likely correct, moths and butterflies make extensive use of camoflague. There is a species of plume here in Oz that looks like a wasp. Guess why?
