I've been thinking about what army to go for after Christmas as my first and I've posted here a few times... last time I talked about it, I was set on Vampire Counts but I had a change of heart.

I've been snooping about GW's site and looking at the piccies (I've never seen a VC army) and I realised that there doesn't seem to be a single good looking Vampire bar the Blood Knights.

Now, see, the reason I'd pick the army is because I love Vampires... the core units don't really sell it to me, I like the ghosties and the corpse carts but that's about it.

The concept is effectively ruined for me by the hideous units: All I can think of is converting the Empire plastic Wizards or these Chaos dudes:

I think for me the only aesthetically palatable armies left are Beastmen and Warriors of Chaos :(

Surprised this model doesn't appeal: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat490059a&prodId=prod1120099

As it stands, even if you don't like the VC models VC's are fantastically easy to convert. Can you fit it on a 20mm base? [Y / N] Can it be made to look dead-ish? [Y / N] That's about all you need for Vampire conversions, some way to get it on a 20mm base and represent that it's not a living member of the given race.

The winged vampire isn't too bad. Also you can take the necromancer model on the corpse cart and put it on a base. Also you can take any empire model and convert it. An ideal one is this one. http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440090a&prodId=prod20010 You can use it as a battle standard bearer if you want or as a normal vampire as first intended

Its called sarcasm. Really what does it taste like?

You might want to reconsider your thread title.

Mantic and Gamezone a.o. make big undead armies. Avatar of War, Reaper and others make nice single vampires.
Don't know if non-GW miniatures are an option. Otherwise I wouldn't buy a hundred miniatures i don't like.

Unfortunately, I don't really like the look of most of the GW vampire models either... although I agree that the one with the single wing up is awesome!

@Minsc
Dracula? Oh please...

I have two Mantic ghouls that I got for free but I'd prefer to keep to GW.

I'm not sure about whether conversion's a good idea or not, I'm going to wait until the New Year to actually pick an army as I won't have any funds until then... just thought I'd post that VCs seem to be a tad ugly.

slow is a verb meaning to hold back. I do not see how vampires look 'held back' in development

We can play Mr. Literal by-the-dictionary or we can pander to common-usage...

I see two people have decided the smart-alec route is the better one

But I apologise, next time I'll avoid giving in to my gut-instinct of pandering towards colloquialism and consult a Thesaurus, preferably one from a lesser publisher that might actually opt to include more "liberal" interpretations of 'slow'.

Though granted I think Crimson Devil was more concerned about the possibility that the title was offensive.

I don't know about all the vamps looking bad, the flying one is pretty cool, von carstein's not bad and I personally rather like the lamian vampire (the one with the snake.)

I agree that the GW Vampire Counts look imbecilic. TBH the heroic scale does nothing to help.
Avatars of War, Gamezone and Mantic have resurrected the Undead and are surely the way to go.
The savings you make with the excellent Mantic zombies and Skellies will leave you with pennies to spend on Gamezones Revenant Cavalry and heroes. The AoW Vampiress as Photo said is super too.

Yea theres plenty of companies that do vamps/etc better

for crying out loud, mantic's Necromancer dances over GW's really old ones
