So The Chaos Dreadnought has one of the most interesting rules in all of 40k; Crazed.. What was your worst encounter with one of these things going ape-gak, and your best?

as for worst...
I had a recent doubles game (sadly it was CSM/CSM vs SW/Orks, we were in for a beating) and my partner LOVES walkers... three chaos dreads and three defilers (guess what the dreads had... multi-meltas..)

He gave them multi meltas thinking he could decimate the SW player's tanks and then drop the defiler plates onto the contents.. good plan.. but the method and dice gods thought other wise..

My men were in four rhinos. ready to plow up the field and discharge their angry payload. I had plenty of oblits to take out anything attempting to slow my men down. my flamer chosen were going to outflank and roast the squishy orks from behind. while i had a melta chosen squad waiting in cover to let loose on the only ork trukk carrying ghazgul himself..

my plan was perfect.. until he plopped all three of his dreads behind my most important rhinos "ill use em for cover while you move em up k?" my partner tells me...
Im looking at those muli-meltas and my heart is pounding.. If he rolls ANY 1's.. my plans hooched.

We get to go first.. and before i can do anything (since crazed must be rolled before any movement) and he takes his three dice... and he rolls....

1......2.......3... ones... I pretty much cried..

his dreads didn't even have to turn.. he scored explodes! result on all three of my rhinos.. I rolled my saves... alot of 2's and 1's.... lost about half my army FROM MY OWN TEAM..

The turn continued, my surviving men hobbled up slowly.. and his dreads now unable to move cus they fire frenzied. defilers all scattered off target. oblits managed to stun SW landraider. melta chosen fried the scouting deff koptas. BOTH of my lashes were negated by fething OP librarians.

their turn came.. raped alot of his stuff. mostly ignored my stuff...

Our turn came... two of his dreads are still near my own men.. he rolls.. two 1's.. (one was actually cocked but he re-rolled and it was a 1 anyway). (OH COMON!? GIVE ME A BREAK)

his heavy flamers fried my troops.

to cut it short... we lost by turn 3

I... HATE... CHAOS... DREADNOUGHTS!!!!

BEST moment..

A Chaos Dreadnaught not only SURVIVED being charged by 3 termies with a chainfist and 2 PF. He killed them before they even got to hit him!. Another time was when a dread rolled rage, it waddled up to a monolith and dropped the pimpslap on it.

More proof that the only Chaos dread worth taking this edition is the dual DCCW one.

Iron Warriors - 4000 points (non-inflated, full FOC)
Black Crusade - 1500 points (non-inflated, led by Abaddon)
Jenen Ironclads (traitor IG/ABG) - 4000 points (non-inflated)

The only CSM player in my regular group has a beautifully converted Nurgle Dreadnought that he admits is entirely useless, but continues to try to field in the hopes that one day it will redeem itself.

I played two games against it, once a couple weeks ago and once last Sunday.

In the first game, he managed to roll a 1 all three turns it was alive, and continued to shoot up his own Marines. Then I felt sorry for him, so I popped it with a lascannon to the face.

In the second game, he rolled a 1 on turn 1, shot up his Terminators (didn't actually do any damage, though). Turn 2, he managed to actually roll a 2, and used it to assault my ally's outflanking Genestealers. Of course, those Genestealers basically kept it tied up for the rest of the game.

So both times he used it against me, it has completely failed to do jack-all, except kill his own Marines and a couple of Genestealers.

...urrrr... I dunno

Best moment with my Chaos Dread (lascannon/CCW with heavy flamer):
It gets immobilised in turn 2 by some sneaky Eldar falconry. For the next three turns, it avenges itself by blowing up every Eldar tank on the field, before turning it's heavy flamer on some unfortunate banshees in the last turn.

Worst moment with the same Dread:
On turn one it takes a dislike to my Slaaneshi marines, shoots at them and kills 3, before rolling a 6 next turn, running headlong at a loyalist dread and getting killed for it's trouble.

Best:

Tournament mission with quarters deployment and old style DoW deployment (everything else in Reserve). I am playing shooty Eldar and packed way into the far corner. Dread arrives from Reserve along with two Oblits. Both come in from the middle of the table edge to get as close as possible. The Dread rolls a 1. My opponent asks "does he fire immediately or may I fire everything else before?" he fires the rest of his army, missing with everything. The dread fires his Multi Melta twice, two hits, two wounds, two failed invuls, two dead Oblits.

Next turn, Raptors arrive and push towards my army directly in front of his (my?) Dread. He rolls another "1" kills three Raptors, they fail Morale and fall back off-table.

By 3rd turn I put him out of his misery and killed the Dread for him.

Just goes to show ya.

Chaos dreads are just not worth it, no matter HOW bad ass they look. They Almost never make their points back, nor do they do anything but hurt your own side.

Now to correct this..

DROP PODS.

This will allow the dread to be placed near the enemy right from the get go and if he rolls a 1, hes going to kill the drop-pod going "LOLOLOLOL" Then get sniped in the ass.
if not. hes free to actually DO some damage!

My best experience:

Well in a game vs. Necons.
Dread w/ MM.

Turn 1: The Dread fire frenzies and shoots 2 spawn in cover, no damage done.
Turn 2: Acts normal but doesn't do much.
Turn 3: Blood Frenzies and charges after a '5' fleet into a monolith. 1 Hit, 1 Pen, Wrecked.
Turn 4: Dreads acts normal and attempts to move through Monolith Wreck and immobilizes itself.
Turn 5: Fire Frenzy, closest target is a Building Building with necron warriors inside. Result: explodes. Kills several necrons and more importantly, the 6" explosion manages to kill my 5 lesser deamons camping on an objective.......the last scoring models in my army.

Turn 6: luckly the possessed charged in and cleaned up enough necron warriors to phase him out.

If it was vs. any other army, my dread would have kill my last scoring models .

Fun guy, just not one to take seriously. He is capable of really good stuff with the 1 and 6, though positioning it to make it a reality is quite annoying.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

The positioning is the killer. Even if you're going with the "LOS is from the arm weapon THEN pivot" ruling, the fact that you've got to carefully maneuver everything around it is a huge penalty all on its own.

As someone else mentioned, it'd be a lot more useful with a drop pod. Maybe next codex edition...

It's pretty funny when they dump plasma blasts into their own Marines. I saw one shoot another Chaos dread in the back with a lascannon because of an unlucky fire frenzy roll.

I regularly run 3 dual DCCW ones in my Khorne army. They take fire away from my Rhinos and Defilers!

Dread Claws are great if the local meta is cool with FW stuff like that.
Actually even then... kinda crappy to roll a 1 on a fully combat dread 1" away from charging first turn.

Actually...that's the pinnicle of 'wtf' people have with the Chaos Dreads.
