I was just wondering if you WHFB veterans knew of anywhere a noob could find army lists using the IoB models - I know all the basics, but what kinds of wargear, spell lores, etc to use. I'm looking to be able to have good games between the two armies. Approximately same point costs, etc.

Should be a fun exercise

I don't actually collect any of those armies (yet) but i'll do my best to give you advice:

If you're thinking of collecting both the armies in the box then you should get the army books for them, this'll let you write lists and expand them equally, i.e adding a 200pt unit of HE and then a 200pt unit of skaven.

I know the HE can use any battle magic lore, plus the lore of high magic (in thier army book), and i think skaven have two spell lores of their own, one of which is used by warlock engineers, one by plauge priests and grey seers can use both. I know nothing of the magic items, but you could use the ones in the rulebook.

With the HE you'll have to get more core units of you want a legal army, as only one unit, the sea guard, are core. Also the base points of a prince on griffon is, i think, 350 so it'll be a while before you can use him in games. I think a noble can ride a great eagle, so you may be able to use him as one of them, either that or get a prince on elven steed or on foot.

Wow, I hadn't thought of that... you can't field a legal HE army with the IoB set, can you? Very little core in there...

As it is, the High Elf army has at most 180, including a Magic Banner, meaning at best, you're playing a 720 point game.

Legally, you can't field the Griffon Lord. You could, however, field a Lvl2 Mage with Seerstaff.

Swordmasters make up another 180 points + Banner + magic items and the Reavers fill up another 119 points.

Sets you up for about a 600 point game.

2 boxes worth of Skaven will give you 1108 if you field all the 40 of the Crats with sheilds and spears and full command
and 40 of them with Just seids and full command

This does however leave you with ALOT of points to Give your Warlords and Engineers some pretty awesome Kit !

I do find it funny that GW would sell an illegal army setup in their starter box.

IMO the unit choices are terrible, but the models are nice. I plan on picking up at least 2 or 3 sets of elves.

The only "terrible" choice for High Elves would be the Reavers. Their not the optimal choice, but Sea Guard and Swordmasters fill just about any HE list now a days. This isn't a bad set for High Elves at all. I can't speak for Skaven, but it doesn't seem to horrible for them either. I've seriously been considering buying up a couple boxes for the Skaven alone to get a strong start to an army.

I think GW included the units that they did to cover all the rules.

The reavers are fast cavalry, the sword masters have great weapons, the sea guard have both spears and bows, the are mages in there, the griffon is a monsturous mount, the rast ogres are MI, the warpfire throwers are warmachines, and the clanrat units have HW+shields and another with spears.

This covers most of the unit types, and different types of weapons, so any beginners that buy the box set should get to learn a wide variety of rules quickly. For example if there were no fast cav then most people wouldn't learn the rules for them at all/ or not as thoroughly.

I suppose it is weird that they included an illegal army because there supposed to also be good starting points for new HE and skaven players, but it does help a beginner (which is who the box set is really supposed to be for) learn the rules faster and better.

Ok, assuming that we don't have to meet legality requirements for army comp, what would the lists be? I've got to think someone besides me has done this...
