Hey guys,

I have a 5 man squad of sternguard veterans. The sergeant and 2 others have regular bolters and 2 models have HB 's

Can I use the special issue ammunition with the heavy bolters?

No, "It makes a funny noise" is not an excuse for punching a guardsman

No. The special ammuntion replaces the boltgun's profile

No, you can use it with bolters and combi-weapons, the rules are unambiguous. Even if that limitation wasn't there, there would be no reason to use it with heavy bolters, as it would have exactly the same effects as in a bolter (rapid fire, less range, less ST, less AP except for hellfire).

Heavy Bolter /= Storm Bolter /= Bolter

You are told you can use it in bolters, none of the others are bolters

Oh that sucks. I would of liked the shells that ignore cover

It'd be nice, but the nice fellows above are correct.

This comes up every so often.

That is to say, often.

The bottom line is that if it's described as a "boltgun" in the armory, and the special issue ammunition replaces the Veteran's "boltgun's" profile, it can only be used if the Veteran is armed with a "boltgun."

Besides, why would you want a Rapid Fire profile on a heavy bolter anyway? Or less than 36" range? Or S4?

You get all of the above when you use the special issue ammunition. All part of the package.

Heavy Weapons are a waste in Sternguard squads. You are better off taking combi weapons, since they DO work with the special ammo when you fire the bolter half.

And it's the only way to get ten meltaguns into a single unit. For Marines, anyway.

Yea, but better to take 5, 3-4 combi plas, and a few flamers, versatility is the best, especially as 5 bs4 meltas is almost always enough to drop a land raider every time.

Well sure, in practicality I'd never drop 10 Sternguard directly behind a Land Raider anyway. I don't spend 250 points on a suicide squad if I can avoid it.

5 Sternguard with Combi-Meltas does the trick.
