SETUP: A 3 level ruin (ground and 2 floors above) with an objective on the top floor. I have 3 squads, one on each floor all spread so they are covering all access level by level. Top and Middle squads both holding the objective, bottom squad acting as a tarpit in the event of an assault.
My opponent aproaches the building to within 1" (my bottom squad was right up against the inner side of the wall). For his assault move he rolls a 5. Instead of moving into the ruins (engaging the squad on the ground) he moves 1" to contact the outer wall of the ruin, then elevates 3" along the OUTER side of the wall up to the middle floor, then moves 1" onto the floor assaulting that unit and now contesting the objective.

He killed the squad but then I shot his remaining troops to pieces and went on to win the game...but for future gameplay, is it legal to assault into upper floors in that way?

Life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be worse if Life were fair, and all of the really terrible things that happen to us were because we deserved them?

Yes. The Rules allow you to move within 1" of enemies in the assault phase, even if you are not assaulting them.

My issue was not about him being 1" away (although in hind site he would have to get closer than 1" since my base was against the inside of the wall and his was against the outside edge of the wall), but rather the ability to move up a level without actually having gotten inside the building/ruins first.

There is no "inside" or "outside" the ruin (other than possible area terrain as decided between players beforehand). The unit requires X movement to get to the building and Y movement to make it up to the top. If X + Y is 5 inches or less than he may move to the top as he did.

i may be finding things that aren't there but i seem to recall somewhere saying that objectives had to be on the table not up in buildings/ruins.

apologies if im totally wrong.
