I finally settled on using lead weights for the miniatures I have difficulty keeping from kissing the table top.

Any precautions I should use with these weights?

Don't eat them.

Or put them up your nose, or any other orifice for the matter.

Sensibly though, wash yer hands after 'installing' them, and give 'em a quick coat of varnish to seal the bad juju inside and prevent contamination while handling.

Yes, the last thing you want is the evil lead spirits escaping, and living in your cereal box!

Seriously, lead is poisonous if you breathe it or eat it. I have lead weights in my fishing tackle box, and take no extra precautions as to its storage or handling.

If you file or cut the lead, dont inhale the shavings.

Simple, limited exposure won't do jack to you. You don't need a rebreather, you don't need kevlar reinforced nitrile gloves, you just need a bit of common sense - avoid ingesting/inhaling/inserting the stuff and give it a simple seal, like Orki suggested, just to be on the safe side. Varnish is fine for sealing, but even a simple coat of PVA glue would do.

What? No mention of NBC suits?

On another sensible note, lead poisoning will build up over the years of handling though...

If you're doing new bases, stick them on before you prime and do the lot. If it's already painted, seal it with some paint or varnish of the brush on variety. Overly precautious but won't take long.
