I finally buckled down converted a few of chims into hydras (interchangeable of course) and man do they kick some serious ***. Great for poppin' those transports before they can touch my gunline and very impressive versus infantry as well.

My one question is what seems to be the best number to run hydras in? I run two as a squad at the moment with LR's in the other heavy support slots, but is it worth going for that third one for the near guaranteed kill on vehicles/squads or is that too much of a point sink?

It depends what size game you're going for. In a 1000 point game I doubt you'd need a third, but if you're going to 2500 why the hell not? If you're shooting big squads of bikers or tougher skimmer vehicles, weight of fire will be awesome.

At 75 points apiece, they're not exactly expensive, so in large point games, I'd say, "the more, the merrier."

Volume of fire is always your friend with IG, and twelve twin-linked autocannon shots is... voluminous.

I made my own actually. It's really easy with just the aegis defense line pack. I used this tutorial to make the conversion. It ends up lookin' something like this: . It's a relatively cheap conversion (about 20 bucks for the terrain pack), easily interchangeable between your chim and hydra, and you get a bunch of useful waist high cover for your gaming table if you have one.

But yeah, my buds and i usually play around 1000 to 1500 point games. I guess I'll just try running a 3-man squad of these next time and see how they fair. I have a feeling it might be overkill, but worth a shot.

Every time Nickmund posts, I find myself trying to decipher the post, getting about halfway through, then my brain breaks.

@ OP:

Personally I'm not a huge fan of the Aegis pack used as a Hydra turret... the guns just look disporportionately small compared to the rest of the vehicle and the body of the turret itself. That's why I'm as big a fan of the FW model as I am - they made the guns big enough to look like BOFORS cannons, the 40k equivalent of which is what I've always imagined Hydra turrets being armed with.

Well, thats not the pic of mine unfortunately. but mine looks pretty much exactly the same minus the paint job. If you're talking about the square console/window thing in the middle that just comes on one of the panels that would normally make up the base of the aegis defense gun. You basically just move what would be the top of the base to the bottom and fill in the top with a piece of plasticard, drill two holes in the side for the guns and that's about it. Took me like 30 mins in the end lol

EDIT: And yeah, the forgeworld ones look great, but there's no way I'm paying 60 bucks for a 75 point tank.

That's how I felt about a lot of the conversions I saw, this one looked much better IMO than say the ones where they just literally glued the aegis gun to the top of a chim and called it quits. The only real issues I have with this conversion is the guns don't seem long enough for a gun that has the range of a LR battle cannon and also the gun chassis sits a little high above the tank itself for my liking.

that pretty good you could give it a different designationlike the aegis class hydra and you get bitz leftover. thats my favorite thing about 40k ATM, all those bitz soo much potential
