Getting into 40k and I have chose Orks. Here is what I got:
20 AoBR Boyz
3 Defkoptas
1 AoBR Warboss
5 AoBR Nobz
1 Box of Boyz
1 Box of Killa Kans
and 60 more AoBR boyz on the way.

I also have bought some shoota arms and am looking to get more to convert some more shootas. My idea is a mini Kan wall with the 3 Kans providing cover for 30 flootslogging shootas/2 big shootas protected by a big mek with KFF. Maybe 10 Lootas nearby to take advantage of the KFF as well. Then on their flank will be the warboss leading 30 sluggas. If I have more points (dont have the codex in front of me at the moment) the other flank will have another squad of slugga boyz lead by a PK and Bosspole Nob. The Slugga squads will run up the flanks and the kans and shootas will drive up the middle. Also the defkoptas can be used with their TL Rokkit Launchas to help deal with any Tanks or Transports. Maybe add some gretchin for objective sitting. Does this sound like a good start for learning the game? This will probably be for lower point 1k-1.5k battles.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

I'd bump 10 lootas up to 15 to give them maximum firepower. I'd also get Nobz for all your boyz squads. In other words, get the Nobz box twice - once to make Nobz to lead your boyz mobs, and once to kit out 5 nobz for your Nob squad.

You've got a fine army for learning the game. Orks aren't hard to pick up. You should have posted this in the 40k forum instead of the general discussion forum though!

Tactically speaking, you're better off putting the Lootas somewhere with good firing lanes and cover rather than relying on the KFF. Your Mek will be advancing with the Kans and Boyz, while you want you Lootas stationary. Also, if you're firing the Lootas through your Kan wall, you're giving your opponents cover saves.
