I may have a hard time explaining this but here goes. I played in a tournament for the first time a month or so ago. It wasn't anything huge, just something at a local hobby shop. We were still in 7th edition. My first battle was underway and I was getting charged. The way the unit charged was so that even with the free wheel only 2 or 3 guys actually contacted my unit. He then proceeded to move his entire unit over so everyone was in combat. I spoke up right away and was all "Hey man, what are you doing? Only about 3 guys made it into combat." He proceeded to tell me that that was how you play. The rulebook says you have to get as many people into contact as possible. I rebutted with that is all well and good, but you are still limited to the constraints of your movement, and if he won combat he could then align however he wanted.
We ended up calling the tournament organizer over and he sided with the other guy. That is how you play he told me. I reread the after that and have since scoured the 8th edition rules and I still say that they are misinterpreting. Do you automatically line up perfectly every time, even if your maximum movement after all your wheels and free wheel you can still only line up with one guy? I've NEVER played that way in friendly games with friends. A few of them were in the same tournament and this was news to all of them as well. rulebook

No, you do not.
What he was doing is called sliding and, in 7th, was strictly only allowed if *both* players agreed to it, as it was in an appendix to the first BRB FAQ.
If your maximum movement (and free wheel in 8th) STILL only lets you contact one model in the unit, that is all you are in combat with. Sliding sucks and I hate it - it is less critical in 8th, with movement being less highly constrained, but in 7th it could entirely change overrun / pursue angles.

even with the free wheel, and free close it still possible to only get 1 model in contact. but after the first round of fighting you can do a combat reform and move the whole unit into contact.
and i only ever played 7th a couple times, but yes sliding was an optioanl rule.

Sliding was a pretty universal part of 7th & the most commonly played method of getting into combat. 8th has no sliding rule - alignment is a matter of how far the charging unit can wheel.

Not in the UK it wasnt. It was a houserule that people mistakenly thought wasnt a houserule.

Sliding wasn't used around here, either. Considering GW's own FAQ said it wasn't the rules and more of a suggestion, well, dem weren't da rules.

Here in Texas, it was pretty much standard. And people mistakenly thought it wasn't a houserule. I would get odd looks when I pointed out that it wasn't technically legal...

Filthy sliders I assume they didnt play the "if you get within 1" of another unit when charging, that unit is in combat as well" either, which is another of the "rules" form the appendix....

I don't think this is correct, is it?
In 8th, you measure the distance to the target unit. Then you roll your dice and add your basic movement. If you are equal to or higher than the distance of the unit, you move the unit, with one wheel, into contact.
The only way you wouldn't get 'full contact' (i.e. close the door) would be if another unit, terrain, or something else prevented you from actually making full contact. And then the rules say that you can move the charged unit to 'close the door' instead.
Your actual move doesn't really matter if your rolled movement equals or betters the shortest distance between the two units.

That's true. The other possibility is starting so close to the unit you're charging that there isn't room wheel sufficiently to get the whole unit matched up.

Yeah it happens a lot in this situation. This is where the combat reform not having to be around the center of the unit (via the FAQ) comes in really handy.
However, with any amount of distance, you most likely will get the majority of the unit into combat.

Cruentus - I am not saying you dont "close the door", but a close the door does NOT involve sliding the models across - you literally wheel about the point of initial contact.
So if you are at the very limits of your movement, even with a free wheel you may still only be able to get one model in contact after the close the door movement - if you are coming in at an extreme oblique angle, for example.
At this point there is NO slide across to falsely increase the number of models in combat. None. Sliding is a complete travesty, wrecking the most important phase of the game - movement.

I agree with this 100%. Sliding takes away from those generals who love the out maneuvering aspect of the game. I could see the logic of using it in the tournament to try and speed things up, but I still don't like it. I've yet to encounter a situation in 8th where my opponent and I haven't collided full on, which is good.

They have made movement a lot easier in 8th, with less ability to get stuck - even if you lose you have a chance to reform, for example.
Sliding wasnt necessary in 7th, and definitely not in 8th
