So after a just getting a feel for Beastmen and being a newcomer to WFB in general, I'm stuck. Originally I bought some beastmen purely because I like the sculpts. Now I have a better understanding of the army I don't really like them. I want to start a low model count army, reasonably easy to paint (still waaaaaaaay behind on my nids) and powerful in close combat. Having a good magic phase wouldn't hurt either. I usually tend to favour the bad guys too. Right now I'm looking at Warriors of Chaos, Vampire Counts, Lizardmen or High Elves, but I have no idea how these armies work since as I have never seen them played. Any thoughts?

WoC is probably your best bet based on the information.

Nasty in CC, very strong magic.

They have virtually no shooting tho...

Vampire counts arent bad, but outside a few units (vampire chars and blood nights) their CC is kinda bad.

Thanks. That's actually the army I was looking at the closest. Was a little overwhelmed with some of the costs though. At 2.5k it's extremely easy to max out your lord slots with 1 level 4 sorcerer and a Lord.

Apart from that I did like what I saw.

A good chunk of armies are like that.

One lord level caster and an ok equipped fighty lord is pretty much all your points at around 2500.

Have you tried Dark Elves?

Low model count? Check
Easy to paint? sort of :(
Powerful in CC? Check
Good Magic phase? check

They're squishy though, only T3 for most units like the high elves.

2 lords on the field is still better than 1 lord slot under 3k points.

625 is alot unless you are running dragons or uber pricey choices.

I'm not that interested in DE. A friend of mine uses them and they aren't really tough enough for my liking.

seems like WoC for you then....
for VC you need lots of fodder and they're considered weak in current edition

If toughness is a concern for you, then high elves and dark elves are pretty much disqualified.

Warriors of Chaos looks like the path to go.

I agree WOC is the way to be, for you anyway.

plus you get a chance to model a daemon prince some day and the current kit for those is pretty sweet.

I actually played a test game against a local WoC player. He soundly beat me to a pulp, but I think that it's put me off them a bit. I have to say, after spending a lot of the afternoon reading about VC I'm quite enthralled. I don't quite know why, but the rules and abilities appeal. Will be having a test game with proxies next week to see how I like the army on the tabletop as well as on paper.

That's the plan. Make a list, try it out. If I like it buy the models.

well for magic you can't beat the slann. they have a low model count as well if you shy away from skinks. a solid army, like a rock with a slann.

Thanks...I'm still looking at options, though like I said VC appeal to me. If after a game I find they aren't quite what I'm looking for will have a rethink.

Sorry to hear that beastmen are becoming less your flavor Lukus. Definitely look into vampire counts. Whilst not being that low on model counts in some armies you have the strong magic + close combat aspect there. And as said maybe lizardmen. If you go for a block or two of 20s saurus and spend the rest on slann, temple guard and stegadons you'll have a heavy magic + tough army. Finally I would maybe suggest Ogre kingdoms. Hear me out! With the new common magic items the characters are better. Plus the pure close combat nature of most units + very low model count would be the least model-wise you can go for without losing effectiveness in the army.

Cheers Lexx. I feel bad about it too. No-one in my area really plays Beastmen so that was another part of the appeal. Unfortunately a friend of mine does play ogres, so I hear what you are saying about their cc. A tyrant upgraded right is unkillable. Looks like he may be moving onto Dwarves though.

In other news have put together a VC list. Hopefully will be getting a game in with proxies this week and if I like how they play I will be making a purchase in the near future. If not then will definitely be looking into Lizardmen.
