i have the following colors for my orks skin c9olor scheme: orkhide shade, knarloc green, and goblin green. up untill recently i had been using just the orkhide and knarloc greens, layering them so that it makes thier buff-ness stand out even more. but today as i was painting a random model for the fun of it i tried goblin green on the top of all that. it looks extremely detailed and cool. but for me i think its a little too bright. should i go with the darker skin or the better detail?

Weird... I responded to another version of this same thread timestamped one minute and two seconds later... It magically disappeared but, luckily, I left the tab open, so I'll repost:

I use orkhide shade, snot green, goblin green, and thrakka green wash (actually, I use the VGC equivalents of the snot and goblin). I tend to cover most of the orkhide basecoat in snot green then give everything a light wash to start defining the softer shadows. A second, more limited coat of snot green adds another layer to help smooth the transition and the goblin green is used only for extreme highlights (brow, lip, knuckles, veins, sinew, etc.). A final wash of thrakka green darkens everything slightly and helps smooth out those final highlights.

You really can have the best of both worlds (dark color and detail) if you add in a wash. I've found that bringing my green all the way up to goblin then washing it helps to give an intense and varied green without being cartoonishly bright. I've also had good luck mixing in small amounts of brown to give that same set of greens a darker, more muted look (say, for nobz, skarboyz, etc.) without really limiting my palette, and thereby my ability to highlight and vary the color.

As Oadie said, but personally, I prefer the other direction - my boys are darker, my Nobs are brighter, and the Warboss is the brightest green of all.

I have tried doing dark, bright Orks. I'll tell you. It is a pain in the a**. Now my Orks are all messed up. It is very hard to do all these schemes. Now I want to dump my Orks.

Thrakka will make it "greener", Devlan will make it "darker", or a nice mix of the 2 will work wonders

Personally I use Dark angels green -> Snot Green -> Goblin green but I tend to go for a "get 3 colours on the model but make it look like I put some effort into it" rather than anything remotely artistic. its simple but its served me well for the last 3-4 years
