Smirk and Dagger head honcho Curt Covert joins the D6G crew this time around to discuss what's new with his company including their newest release: Hex Hex XL.\

After that the boys take a look at two card games that are NOT, believe it or not, based on the Dominion mechanic! Up first is the aforementioned Hex Hex XL, does the new bling improve the game? And how could we resist taking a look at Death Angel: The Space Hulk card game from Fantasy Flight games.

And don't miss a new listener segment: Nutshell!

All that and our other not-too-horrible segments including:
- The Hollywood Minute
- Total Fan Girl
- The News
- Do You Ever Notice
- & More

So, as a contest entrant I've been waiting patiently for this show to come out. I just fast forwarded to the 10 minutes or so you guys spend talking about the heraldry contest. You didn't explicitly say it...I presume the guy who sent you the actual wooden shields won?

Haha, it sucked to have "purr" as the alert sound for MSN and listening to the show.

That's the impression that I got. I notice that whenever I enter a contest it is always one where they take two episodes to post the results and it hits iTunes late.

Overall, great show; once again you make me interested in a game that normally I would not give a rodent's hind quarters about. In this case it was Hex Hex XL.

Great show - and I enjoyed the new Nutshell! segment. As a fan of minis games - but not any current GW/PP games - I really hopes this segment sticks around. One little criticism I have is about the discussion as it pertains to 5150. I would have like to hear a sentence or two comparing the difficulty of the game to other more popular games, and which ones 5150 most plays like.

Since many of the podcast listeners probably have 40K figures, I would also have mentioned and stressed the fact that the yahoo group contains stats for fan-made "unofficial" 40K-like troops. If you're already a fan of 40K and own lots of figures, but are tired of the rules and want to try using your existing figures in a differently-playing skirmish game the 5150 rulebook is a cheap investment.

Aside from these criticisms I can't wait to hear the next installment and look forward to discussions of more of the boutique miniatures games out there.

Yeah, they were killing me...I thought I had a good entry, and then the results got delayed one show (darn GenCon!), and then so many teases for this one.."It'll be out on the 1st...It'll be out in 24-48 hours...It'll be tonight...It's finally out!" I was like a fish on the line... Kinda bummed about the result though...if I thought that anyone was seriously going to send in actual wooden shields I wouldn't have bothered entering.

Russ/Craig/Raef - I do have one suggestion about the contests. Any way you can reply when you get a contest entry? Just a simple "Thanks, got it!" or something like that? As it is, I just kinda fired my entry off to the "Contests" email address and hoped you guys got it.

Now I gotta go listen to the rest of the show...

WOOT! I got an honorable mention for my Chuck Norris entry Now if only I'd managed to get an actual shield made I would have clinched the win for sure...

Firstly, another great episode so far. I am still working through it, and I am looking forward in particular to the Space Hulk FFG card game review, as I have had this on pre-order for a while.

Many thanks. I do plan on this segment being around for as long as the guys will give me the space, although I plan on dropping it in to every second episode (so, the odd numbers, it seems....).

I do see your point. I think that the difficulty there is that I am not entirely sure how I would categorise 5150 and what it plays like. It is clearly different from 40K and Warmachine, and to me feels more or a 'relaxed' game. I think that you really have to approach it is as a passtime to have some fun, and not really worry about 'winning', etc. The closest that I would say it plays like, is Vor, and even that is not a great comparrison. But, if I understand your meaning, I do agree that the explanation was a little dry, on reflection, and could do with a bit more about how the game plays and feels, alongside the discussion on the mechanics. I will keep this in mind. Thanks.

Since many of the podcast listeners probably have 40K figures, I would also have mentioned and stressed the fact that the yahoo group contains stats for fan-made "unofficial" 40K-like troops. This is very true. However, while the additions are 'accepted' by the designers on the Yahoo Group, they are not part of the core game and are fan-produced. A more in-depth look at the game would probably have included them, but I really intend this to be a hook that people can decide whether they want to investigate a game more fully, and most science fiction games these days have 40K conversion stats for them on the web somewhere.

Aside from these criticisms I can't wait to hear the next installment and look forward to discussions of more of the boutique miniatures games out there.

Many thanks for your comments and feedback, they are much appreciated.

CyberShadow,
Thanks for the reply. I did actually go back and re-listen to the segment. I understand that you're not trying to do a full review of the game, but I think you might want to add a quick statement covering if you personally like the game, and the one or two main reasons why you like the game in contrast to others. I think that might help provide a hook to nudge others towards the game.

I also liked to 5150 segment of the show. I own these rules and it was nice to hear them discussed on the d6g. I'm looking forward to more reviews of "boutique" games. Great job.

I would like to tender a request for a new recording of the Lone Wolf commercial. Every time I hear Raef say, "...and coming in July 2009" I want to cringe just a little.

Similarily, I was listening to World's End Radio for the first time (checking out their two part Rockethammer over-view) and heard a promo for D6 that still called out "When Wives Attack"...

Just little things that irk the anal retentive side of me...

But, I know you all have limited time...and I would rather that time be put into a) your families b) gaming and c) recording new episodes...so.....

;-)

Hey guys,

Great Ep, as always. I just wanted to say that I went out and purchased Death Angel due to your review, so a big thanks for that!

I posted some of my thoughts on the game in this thread:

Overall I really like it and can't wait to play it in non-solo form where I imagine it really shines.

Thanks for pointing that out Jeff. We should have those things corrected soon.

Yak: Glad you managed to score a copy. I hear the first print run is already sold out. I think your write up is fair, although it is easier with more players, mostly because you've got that many more folks problem solving and trying to maximize each marines' turn.

We get a lot of "Wait, what if YOU face left and shoot that way and then I throw a support token on him, and then Russ puts up a barrier here..." kind of stuff.

It's a great little filler game, and I think the difficulty preserves the replayability.

P.S. Sorry I missed you on Reach the other night.
