Are Grey Knights worth their cost in an IG army, and if so what kind of armies are they effective against?

Not surprisingly they are good against chaos marines or Daemons. Though with the current imperial guard codex its more of a taste thing than effectiveness. I remember when daemon hunters came out and they were ridiculously good. But time has really left them by the wayside in effectiveness.

I've been told basically that GK are only good vs demons and that marines are better. I dont know this myself but it would seem that way. Either way try a squad of Terminators see how it works. I love the idea personally.

Ya termies are good in any situation but eh grey Knights have the stormbolters and their cc weapons by default

Probably not worth purchasing Grey Knights or Grey Knight Terminators if you just want to use them as allies because the allies might go away in a few months when the new Grey Knight codex comes out in January.

Grey Knight Terminator allies can be worth it as a counter assault unit since you really can't get a good assault unit in the guard codex with out running Straken and a large platoon with power weapons and a commissar which end up costing more points.

IMO, the basic GK isn't worth his 25pts. Our termies are amazing, made of pure win with a hefty dose of cream on top but out basic guy? Me thinks no. You see, for 25pts, your getting a fragile platform, that is out preformed by both dedicated assault troops in assault and out shot by dedicated shooting troops, who usually do the job for less. You also have to include a mandatory justicar who for an extra 25pts your get an extra attack, a power weapon NFW and access to the (limited) armory. Out terminators are slightly cheaper than justicar's while having the same stats beside leadership 10 (not very useful with fearless but it helps with holocaust), a 2+ armour save and a 5+ invun + shrouding. Combined with the option of an wincinerator (incinerator for those nay-sayers who prefer psycannons) or a psycannon which can always fire at its full 36". Their unit leader, although 11pts more than a justicar, gets an extra attack and access to the (full) armory. All the terminators have access to a physic power known as holocaust which is a small blast template over the model, useful if in CC.

To sum up, terminators are great, they have good rules, cool models and because of the way there are no PAGK squad sets on GW's website as of now, cheaper in both cash (that is if they haven't disappeared too) and points.

I hope they dont get rid of allies I thought that was cool. GKs do need a slightly wider product line.

must agree with above post all the way. i would really like to see a bunch of cool new units for GK. they deserve some!
