So I was just starting lizardmen and I was reading in my friends old army book not the new one and on page 25 it says how Saurus with spears may only make 1 attack since of 2 so im guessing - hand weapon and shield is the only way to equip these guys? I just happen to be gluing the battalion together right now

Well see that's the problem with unsing an old book to learn, said rule dosen't exist in the current one.
Now saurus are pretty tough anyway and having spears is usually not worth that extra point per model, since it tends to add up quite fast, and the HW+Shield gives you parry to help struggle through till I2 rolls around.

I have had success with both, i fun a unit of 24 with spears 6x4 and a unit of 15 with hw+shield 5x3. To me, a bigger unit with spears is great but if they get 20 or smaller they need hand weapons. the parry save really isn't that great, every once in a while it'll save you from something, but it really becomes useful against very high strength attacks strength 7ish. Essentially I'm not as big a fan of the hand weapons as everyone else seems to be.

True not a big difference though.

I agree with Bleedge. Personally I love fielding my Saurus with spears. Usually I have a block of 30 of them, spears, shields, 6 x 5. That gives you 24 attacks on the front at S 4. For there cost, they are definately worth it.

So you basically pay 30 pts for 6 extra attacks. I myself preffer the parry save for free, but both weapon combos are equally viable and usefull.

Edit: Having both is still the best option

Well, you can't have both on the same unit in 8th. If you purchase an upgraded weapon you must use that. So if you purchase spears, your lizardmen are now armed with spears.

Its 30 points for 6 extra attacks per round, not just 6 extra attacks. They pile up, and I find that you end up killing more than you would save of your own due to the 6+ parry save.

I meant as in the entire army, that would take at least two units of e'm.

It's pretty much an issue of personal preference between a little bit more killy, or little bit more durable (both of which they are pretty decent at already). My brother runs his with spears and they still are a pain to kill off even without the parry save, I blaim that on the life slann though.

Warhammer 40k Ultramarines 5000pts Green Tide 2500pts Foot sloggin' Romanoth 1st-5th 3000pts Eldar 1250 pts

Its a matter of usage as well. I use mine as an anvil so i take shields for added durability and cheapness, and yes life slanns are
