I just watched this documentary today and all I can say is, holy cow, these guys are serious about their Donkey Kong.
For those who haven't seen it, the documentary centers around the top scoring Donkey Kong player in the world and his seeming efforts to roadblock a challenger to his record. It's an interesting insight into the gamer world and shows a lot of the politicing that goes on.
I think it's a show a lot of Dakkites would appreciate on that level alone with all the passionate debate that goes on about the various tournaments mentioned on these boards.

Just within the last month or so Billy Mitchell reclaimed the title.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

The documentary makes him look like a total punk. I wonder how much was for dramatic effect.
It'd be interesting to see him do an actual head to head game against the challenger. Did he regain the record for playing in public or was it another video he sent in?

I did like the daughter's comment about the Guinness Book of World records. She didn't look to be much more than 8 or 9, but she made the observation that some people ruin their lives to be in that book. Pretty profound kid.

The film took a couple of liberties. The big one is that the film says that Scott's disputed high score would have removed Billy Mitchell's last high score record from the books. That isn't true at all, some other guy had taken Mitchell's record off him years before, and Scott in turn had beaten that guy and already held the record. The disputed million point score by Scott would have been him beating his own record.

That said, the film makes one thing completely clear, Billy Mitchell is a complete dick and the horde of little Billy Mitchell acolytes are inspid people. These kinds of people are sadly common in nerd circles, and the film is very . The director is on the record as saying Billy Mitchell is a far more odious person than the film showed. I really liked the movie because it showed how odious small group politics can become.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Adam Smith, who must have been some kind of leftie or something.

I saw a lot of parallels between the people in the show and tabletop gamers. There are the "stars" of the game and the people that hang on around them as well as the way some of these people tend to circle the wagons to protect their one shiney thing in life against challengers.
Something that cracked me up was Billy Mitchell talking about video game "groupies". I really have to wonder what they must have looked like.
