So I'm in a bit of a pickle. I was planning to build a very heavily magic themed army but after looking at the close combat Vampiric Powers I have a feeling I'm missing out on a lot of options. It seems quite viable (to me at least), to take the lord as a close combat monster and use Hero level vampires to take up the magic side of things. Something like:
Vamp lord
Red Fury
Infinite hatred
Beguile
The Flayed Hauberk
Dawnstone
Sword of Strife
Chuck this guy in a unit of Graveguard and you have a pretty decent unit that can either rack up combat res or kick some serious butt in challenges.
It's a pickle in this edition allright, but your epiphany is backwards. Because of the inherent risks and disadvantages of crumbling it's generally better to make your Vampire Lord a caster and the Vampires the fighters. A caster can be bunkered and be kept out of harm's way much better than a combat monster who is trying to find something very dangerous to fight with.
Well that's the feeling that I got originally. Keep the general safe and let the minions do the fighting. It's also easier to stack up on magic casting stuff for Vamps...
But, after a bit of thought I have put together a list. The vamps would be kitted like this:
Vampire Lord
Red Fury
Infinite Hatred
Walking Death
Nightshroud
Potion of Strength
Sword of Bloodshed
Vampire
Forbidden Lore (Lore of Light)
Vampire
Forbidden Lore (Lore of Vampires)
Dispel Scroll
Vampire
Master of the Black Arts
Crown of Commandment
Although the Vamp Lord can cast that's not his main job. Let the others do the casting and let them take the miscasts. No matter what the Lord faces chances are he can take it on.
Read from another thread(or to be specific, Tzeetchling9):
Vampire lord w/
Sword of Bloodshed, Eternal hatred, and Red Fury
Looks pretty good from my perspective
