(Im a noob to 40k) It seems I cant find my rulebook since I moved and I am baffled why I am finding places that tell me dreadnoughts have strength 10 when it clearly says in my chaos space marine codex that they have 6 strength. are they just loyalist ones that are stronger or is there something I missed.
please help, thanks

GENERATION 10: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.
95% of teens would go into a panic attack if the jonas brothers were about to jump off the empire state building copy and paste this if you are the 5% who would pull up a lawn chair grab some popcorn and yell JUMP BITCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Page 73 of the rulebook not the codex. Its off to the right of the page in a box by itself thats why you couldnt find it.

DCCWs double the user's strength to a max of 10. Thus 6 is doubled to the max of 10.

And should a dread lose ALL DCCW, THEN it uses its base S value in cc.

So an armless dreadnaught still has 1 attack?

A dread only loses attacks if it started off with close combat arms which are lost. For the chaos dread it starts with 1, and can take another for +1 attack to its profile.
losing both arms drops its attacks by -2, effectively dropping it to 2 attacks at strength 6
same goes for a defiler.
with two extra cc arms, and its two base cc arms. it will lose an attack for each destroyed extra arm and nother for losing both its base arms. starting off at 5 attacks, (7 on the charge, since it owns a pair of special weapons and charge bonus) if it some how lost all 4 of its cc arms without being blown up (those must have been some REALLY bad rolls) it would drop to 2 attacks base.

bucketwalrus - nope, a chaos dread with NO DCCW has 3 attacks. It has 3 in its profile, taking another one gives it 4 attacks. Losing the first DCCW drops 1 attack (the bonus attack as given by the DCCW rules) but losing the last does not reduce its attacks any further.

If you read its options. If the chaos dread is given two ranged weapons its attacks drop to 2 and loses DCCW status, the same applies if the dread would lose BOTH of its CC arms.

Nope, that is what happens when you replace the arms. The same thing does not happen if it loses both arms, as having 1 DCCW weapon does not increase your attacks at all, accoridng to the rulebook it is only *additional* CC weapons on a dread that increase attacks, not the first.
