So my schedule has changed a bit and I've decided to take the plunge into Warmachine. Bought a handful of units that seemed decent, although the synergy may be off a bit. Looking at around 25 points to start, I've got:
Kara Sloan
Jouneyman Warcaster
Squire
Reinholdt
Viktor Pendrake
Black 13th
Defender
Charger
Hunter
The odd thing about Sloan is she doesn't seem to exist. Most websites don't include her in their Cygnar warcaster analysis, many list building programs don't include her...for me, I like shooty stuff, so she and cygnar seemed like a natural choice. Plus, it's an interesting model.
Anyway, seems like a good start. Would like to hear from the other Sloan players what they think. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and what's the purpose of the faction books? I've got the actual rulebook, but unlike Warhammer (which I'm familiar with), the faction books seem unnecessary. Lists are built from the main book's rules, and each model has its own stat card...seems like you'd be set, at most, with buying the card deck to see what's available.

Pretty much. The faction books are just there so that all the Mk2 rules for a particular faction are in a book somewhere. They have the theme lists as well, but that's usually not a big deal unless you're in love with a specific caster's fluff. There's also big chunks of fluff and painting advice in there, but again, not really required for anything.

Sloan's a relatively new caster (just released in the Cygnar book, although that's getting close to a year ago now...), so it's not too surprising that older list builders don't have her in there. If you've got an iPod, iPhone, or anything running Android, iBodger's a wonderful little army builder that gets updated pretty much immediately.
Haven't played my Cygnar in a while, and I don't have Sloan yet, but looks like you could use a few more warm bodies in there, or another heavy. Not entirely sure where I'd trim the points, tho.

As Laughing Man said Sloan is a new caster and therefore there is not much of experience with her. Also she doesn't bring anything new to the faction (she is range assassin caster in a faction which has Caines and Siege) so there was not whole lot of enthusiasm when she was announced.
What she does is ranged combat so you'll want a good shooty battlegroup to support her and give extra shots on the feat turn so I would give her at defender and hunter along with Reinholdt to reload her gun and squire to give extra focus and extend her control area. Throw B13th in there as they bring so much to the table and deal with stealth, which is Sloan's weak spot. You've now spent 16 of the 25 points. With the rest I would get some speed bumps and melee hitters. You'll need something to slow the enemy advance and keep them from winning scenario and then some unit to deal damage when they hit your lines. For melee you could get stormblades or precursor knights with UA, both are decent choices. Precursors also do the speed bump, stormblades are a second wave unit which doesn't take hits.
And the faction books are not needed, they just bring the fluff of the faction and nice pictures. If you've got the cards you don't need them, especially when using some army composition tool like iBodger or Forward Kommander.

I enjoy Sloan to an extent. Multiple hunter/defenders is awesome. Since the revision on her feat, I haven't enjoyed her quite as much. She's good when facing multiple stealth/incorporeal models. Very entertaining to play none the less.
List seems light for her feat.

I sort of feel the same, but I'm not sure how to adjust it. Her feat mostly relies on free shots from her battlegroup, but she doesn't generate enough focus to power 3 warjacks effectively (I wouldn't think?). Everything in the list can shoot, and so benefits from her secondary feat feature of getting boosted ranged attack rolls. I thought about getting a squad of some sort (Trenchers, rangers, etc) but the Solos and small units (Black 13th) get about the same number of models for the same cost, and the models they do get have more wound boxes, so it seems like a better bargain.
While looking at various merc options, the Freebooter really jumped out at me. If I read it correctly, it gets two 4d6+14 attacks on the charge against downed opponents, along with a free headbutt, throw, etc. Seems like that would trash just about anything, and 6 points isn't bad. The Buccaneer is a cheap Jack with the knockdown ability, and while I have Pendrake to help out against hordes, his bolas can knock things down, too. Is this a good counter charge option for a shooty list? I suppose it's fairly expensive, assuming you take Dirty Meg to run them, but as a novice player it looks like it has potential to quickly kill even the biggest Jacks.

Thats true, a one shot jack needs to get 2 focus to run efficiently in most cases. You can limit the need to give boosted to hit rolls by including rangers, so with them you could run Defender and Hunter with 1 focus each. Also jacks tend to be quite pricy, so in 25 points fitting more than 2 (1 heavy, 1 light) is going to be difficult especially if you are not planning on going with only jacks.
I would run the following as the skeleton of a 25 point list
Captain Kara Sloan
Hunter
Defender
Squire
Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team
Rangers
Reinholdt, Gobber Speculator
It has the ranged assassination and advance deployment to help in winning games and has room for either another light jack or small unit of throw away infantry. What it lacks is any melee punch. The defender can handle his own in melee, but the rest are almost pure ranged units.

Remember you can't use that name when describing a non-Army Builder product. A certain company is getting a bit C&D trigger-happy with that. Must be taking a page out of GW's book.

Her feat only needs one jack in the group. Any extra shots are gravy. I've run her with a Defender and a Charger only and she performs very well.
Usually I run something like this at 35:
Sloan
Defender
Charger
Squire
Reinholdt
ATGM + UA + Cyclone / Defender (whichever I feel more like that day)
B13
Strangewayes
2 Stormcallers
The jacks in the battlegroup are there to just generate that third sniper shot on the feat turn for her. Most games I've played are won in turn 2 or 3.
The problem with her feat is it's a light version of pHaley's feat with it being centered on Sloan rather than the rest of the army. She's not a top tier by any stretch but she's fun to play.
