A friend of mine is really confused about how to take deamonhunter allies with SM so he asked me to ask for some answers on dakka. Basically he wants to know what units you can take from the deamonhunters codex to put into a space marine army as well as what works really well.

Thanks

The units that you can take either way are detailed in the allies rules section in the printed codex. Somewhere around about page 20...

Note that these ruels are not included in the downloadable PDF version. If that's the version he's looking at, that would explain the confusion.

Meanwhile, for future reference: Rules questions go in YMDC. Moving this one over now.

Okay, so then he looks at the deamonhunter's codex?

Yes, however he must look at the printed, bound version of the codex - NOT the PDF off GW website.

The PDF does not contain rules for allies

The printed, bound version does.

You may want to remind him that he may only have another six months or so to use that rule, so he doesn't go out and buy a bunch of GK terminators or a Vindicare assassin only to find out next year they're useless. Once the new DH codex comes out, Allies will most likely be gone.

Making your own assassins from spare parts is more fun anyways.

Hey man, since I'm playing a very similar hybrid army (witch hunters + daemon hunters), and have looked into it pretty extensively, the deal is this:

Look on page 21 of the printed (non-PDF) codex for details on what DH units can be used in other armies, and which other units can be included in a DH army.

Please don't post rules wholesale that can be obtained simply by looking in the book

So essentially, since Daemon Hunters don't have any fast attack options, your friend can take 4 units of the above FoC slots to fill out his army.

Note: Say your friend wants to play a DH army with Grey Knights, he CAN'T do the reverse, ie: field a GKGM HQ, 2 PAGK troops, and fill in the rest with Space Marines. That is, Marines can take Grey Knight allies, But Grey Knights CAN'T take Marine Allies. HOWEVER!

Daemonhunters WITHOUT Grey Knights can take Marine allies. If the FoC doesn't have any Grey Knight units, rather, an Inquisitor Lord HQ with Stormtroopers as the troops choices, then allied Marines MAY be selected.

Clear as mud, right?

Good luck!

I don't mind having my comments edited, admin, but these comments don't further the discussion, and omit information while clarifying nothing. Please assist by citing info in the codex indicating where I was incorrect.

You weren't incorrect, you were citing rules wholesale, which is entirely against policy and borders on copyright infringement. Read the rules before posting.

Citations and snippets of rules? Point values on entire units? Fine.

Entire rules directly from the codex? Point values on individual upgrades? Not fine.

It's not my website either, nor is it my judgment - it's the mod's call, and I'm just clarifying the mod's reasons for editing your post as he did.
