now...on to this....
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/news/a273147/ridley-scott-promises-nasty-aliens.html
Ridley Scott has teased that the prequels to his 1979 horror movie Alien will be "really nasty".
The 72-year-old director, who recently revealed plot details of the upcoming films, warned Virgin Media that his intention to explore the back story of the extraterrestrial monsters would not make for easy viewing.
"The film will be really tough, really nasty. It's the dark side of the moon. We are talking about gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet?"
The Gladiator mastermind added that he was determined to craft a superior product to James Cameron's own intergalactic epic Avatar.
"Jim's raised the bar and I've got to jump to it," Scott stated. "He's not going to get away with it."
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/news/a216154/scott-reveals-alien-prequel-storyline.html
Ridley Scott has confirmed that his new Alien film will involve Space Jockey extraterrestrials.
The director, who also revealed that he has a fourth draft script for the prequel, told MTV that the action takes place decades before Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley boards the Nostromo spacecraft.
He said: "It's set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney. It's fundamentally about going out to find out, 'Who the hell was that Space Jockey?'. The guy who was sitting in the chair in the alien vehicle - there was a giant fellow sitting in a seat on what looked to be either a piece of technology or an astronomer's chair.
"Our man [Tom Skerritt's Captain Dallas] climbs up and says, 'There's been an explosion in his chest from the inside out - what was that?'. I'm explaining who the Space Jockeys were."
Scott added that the colonial corporation Weyland-Yutani has yet to be formed and the sci-fi movie will deal with "terraforming - taking planets and planetoids and balls of earth and trying to terraform, seed them with the possibilities of future life".
When asked if Weaver will be involved in any capacity, Scott replied: "It will be before she was born! But the main character will be a woman
Yes...yes. Going back to original, creepy, ALIEN. I always wanted to learn more about the space jockey...I love the quiet, almost Kubrick aspect of the first film, and it seems like Scott is going back there.

I had a good long discussion going with people about this on an AvP forum, but unfortunately they had some server issues a while back and lost all the threads for that time period, so I can't copy/pasta anything of interest.
I'm really looking forward to this. Like, a lot. A lot, a lot. Alien has been my favourite movie for as long as I can remember, and the potential for another one (or TWO!!! That's right!!) made by the master really has me hopeful.
Another factoid: H.R. Giger once said he'd only rejoin the series if Scott did. Well... here we are. Ball's in your court, Hans. Something else that might be a draw for him is the fact that in order to have the jockies central to the plot, they'll get a lot of screen time, and so will their technologies, environments, etc.
I really can't wait, eh guys.

You're right and this time unlike "Avatar" they're going to be essential to the plot if the rumors are true that is.

He's taken the time to do it right with all his movies. Scott is one of a priviledged few directors that is given the time and money needed to make each of his projects exactly how he wants it. It shows in the incredible production values in each of his films. Unfortunately, something has happened and the stories he's told in the last decade or so have been pretty mediocre, and rather annoyingly message heavy.
This could be good, but there is a lot to suggest it could also be very crap. Even ignoring Scott's fairly poor record since Black Hawk Down, prequels have a fairly average record.

The trouble with that, is that a lot of people will be comparing it to Alien by asking, "was it as good as Alien" which subconsciously means "was it the same as Alien?" I will be watching the new films with a perspective of, "Does this film do justice to the mythos, mysteries, sinister atmosphere and dark beauty of the original Alien flick? Is it an enjoyable, and most importantly, fear inducing (none since the first have captured this IMO) exploration of the uncaring vastness of space that these nightmares dwell within?"
