I've been pondering taking a command squad in my list.
I would run a chapter banner (the command squad equivalent if I have this wrong)
I would run one power fist+Storm Bolter
I would run a melta gun
and a chapter champion? I think that's honor guard but I'm pretty sure you know what I mean my codex is not readily available.
Would this be a good set up or am I wasting my time all together?

Command squads arn't that good for their points (unless you take 4x melta/plasma guns), compared to TH/SS terminators, but if really want to take them you run them like I described above.
Or maybe you could take a ac/lc predator for the points.

yes. command squads are good. a marine with a special weapon is *alot* more effective than a marine without. Since the command squad lets you take more special weapons, and it gives you feel no pain, it's a more aggressive choice. Dont spend too many points on them. thats where alot of players go wrong.

I don't think they're bad, there just always seems to be something else that I'd rather spend the points on.
You know, like Terminators and Speeders and whatnot.

Command squads are a cool idea but not very effectice for their points cost. Every time you fail a save you have to remove a model that's doing something useful.
For the points of a tooled out CS you can get a unit that can shoot better or beat things to death better. I'd go for it though, I love seeing a command squad on the table.
BTW I like your pic Van. It's nice to see a real person on the interwebz

command squads work if you take a captain with a bike.
Give them all melta or plasma guns and watch them tear into the enemy

I include them for completeness mainly. As the Captain or Chapter Master isn't going to roll out to battle with any random troopers. He would roll out with his favoured warriors in his Command Squad.
Hold the banner high and support your Brothers!!!

A neat load out I have seen is taking a Command Squad with 4 Plasmaguns in a Drop Pod that comes in after turn one. Dropping 8 Plasma shots on a squad of MEQs/Terminators caught out in the open is a fun thing to watch.

Well, like most fancy units you can always sink a ton of points into them, but if you stick to basics it seems you can get something handy. I'm probably going to start using a command squad like the one below. It compares pretty favorably to the 55pt more expensive tac squad - it only has 5 guys, but they have feel no pain and a 3+ invulnerable to drop AP3 stuff on and always gets 2 melta shots. The big thing for me is it leaves me room for my captain (and/or any other characters like a librarian or techmarine) to ride along, which tac squads can't do and still take weapons.
165 Command squad w/ Apothecary 2x Veteran w/Melta Gun 1x Company Champion 1x Veteran w/Storm shield
35 Rhino
210 Tac squad w/ Melta gun, missile launcher Sarge w/Powerfist, Combi-melta
35 Rhino

Yes they will fight with any Brother, but when riding out to a large battle it is only good and proper that they ride out with the Chapter Banner held high! =D

A Cmd squad is a fluffy unit for a fluffy leader.
However, a single melta will hit or miss.
I'd take 4 meltas or flamers. That would be a threatening unit.
Now the problem is to bring the unit to the target...

I've just put together a 4-plas squad and plan on using them with a captain with artificer armour / relic blade with a drop pod. Fluffy and short-lived, but fun.
