Hi all
My gaming group has played 40k for many years along with blood bowl, warhammer quest, some roleplay and now starting fantasy. We are thinking of trying a non-GW game as never done one before (and also because I have began to loathe GW's pricing and business decisions)
We have got back into Necromunda big time recently and I have heard when listening to 40k radio ages ago them talking about Malifaux. Would people who have played this reccomend it to others, is it similar to a Necromunda campaign game?
If anyone could give me a breakdown of the kind of game it is and whats involved I would be grateful. I have had a look online and have seen it uses cards instead of dice but other than that I just seem to be finding the spiel quoted off the back of the box.
thanks

Well for starters its a steampunk/horror/scifi/fantasy game. Its a skirmish game, a crew worth about 35 soul shards will only run you about $50 with some exceptions. The biggest difference between this game and others is that it uses a deck of cards instead of dice.
If you ask more specfic questions I can answer those, its a hard game to just describe to someone though...I could show you much easier.

Thanks guys
I suppose what I really want to know is:
* How similar is it to Necromunda?
* Is there a lot of character progression?
* If we already have and like Necromunda, is it worth getting this game as well?

Different games.
There is no character progression "out of the box" like Necro.
It is so different from Necromunda, that it is worth having as well.
I suggest checking out the miniatures. If you like them, pick up a box. Find the book at your FLGS, flip through it a bit.
If you start reading the fluff, you may end up buying the book.

Never played Necromunda before, but I have seen the mini's for it and I have to say that the stuff that Wyrd is doing is much nicer.
There is no character progression in the game, however they are always releasing now models to incorperate into your army, about 3 a month.
Its a very unique game, take a look at it, and read the fluff.

1- The amount of models used is similar, and it's good for urban fighting. I've only dabbled in Necromunda.
2- There is no character progression at all. (Why do skirmish games keep coming out without this?)
3- If you already have Necromunda, I'd say probably. There are a few things to consider. First, do you like the models. This is a very big part, since if you're not into the theme you won't enjoy this game. The second is the system, it plays similar to Warmachine, but with a duel mechanic with cards. There are no dice, just standard 52 card decks for rolls. I think the system works great and is really fresh. Necromunda's system in my opinion hasn't aged well.

54 card deck. Both jokers are necessary.
We've also found that a ton of terrain makes a better game.
We used to do Necromunda, and we use about double the terrain for Malifaux.

More like WM than Necro... in fact, Necro isnt a shade in the sun on Malifaux.
Fate decks allow more possibilities and allow you you plan ahead and 'cheat' fate... remembering, that once your high cards are done, you must wait for a re-shuffle to hope for anything drastic. The skill level involved once you get into Malifaux proper is intense.
Sculpt-wise - Malifaux poo-poos all over almost everything GW has ever released... EVER. It has hot sculpts like some of the Privateer Press and Infinity ranges.
Seriously, just stop reading here and go check it out... then jump on the Wyrd forums and immerse yourself.

One thing I'd like to mention that a lot of people seem to forget is the strategy and schemes system. It makes for very dynamic games.
Basically the system is, you take a random strategy, this is your goal to accomplish in the game, it can be things like objective holding, treasure hunting and mass slaughter. At the end of the game you gain VP points for either completing or partially completing your strategy.
Then you have schemes, where the real fun comes in, you get to choose which ones you take, they give you less VP then your strategy, but the catch is, you don't have to tell your opponent which schemes you have. However with most schemes you can reveal them for a +1VP bonus if you still manage to complete it. These include things such as guarding a certain model the entire game or having more models in your enemy's deployment zone than he does.
In smaller games you can take 0-2 schemes, in larger you can take as many as 3.

Fantastic games, the models are as said before, brilliant and they are what captured my imagination for this game. It's got a decent background fluff and a key thing is it's a character driven skirmish game, most models have a name and are individuals with a story and some awesome special rules.
As well, Malifaux uses synergy (With some crews) much more than in necromunda (What little I've played of it) and also it's a model by model activation step, so you do stuff with a model, they do stuff with a model and back and forth like that.
If there's anything else specific you'd like to know, just ask!

All in all it is a great game.
As to the necromunda question, you are going to have to do something like campaigns for yourself.
The characters could progress if you and your buddies came up with a few house rules, such as start the single play scraps with specific goals, such as one of those Reaper Miniatures Magic treasures, then have the game revolve around building up your teams.
As you play the games, the teams grow, and you hire more and more guys up to your agreed on numbers, or keep going if you want to.
Biggest issue I've found though is that too many guys are going to get complicated, quickly.
Each guy is pretty much his own unit, so to speak, and the rules are wonkey as you get more guys on the table. Afer too many guys you are going to get board waiting for turns and trying to figure out counters to countermoves.
A good game is about four or five guys or so for a good couple of games to not get too bogged down.
As you progress the game, you guys could play different scenarios, based on what you guys want to do.
Example, You guys fight it out in a full scale 4 way with one or two guys to gigut over the magic item, then as you find out the winners, you tailor the scenarios on the fights.
After you get the treasure hunt, you then got to get the treasure back to your lines, then you go and fight out a snatch and grab, and maybe have some of those sidebar enemies show up, for kicks, then depending on if you kept the treasure, or lost it you continue to fight over the scraps, and even to the point of chasing the other armies out of the town you fight in, or the sewer section, or patch or mine or whatever.
You could make up a couple of special rules, based on your town, that might give you extra soulstone, minions, trade goods, etc.
Might try fighting over a mine, for the soulstone deposits, and extra income that you'd use to keep the minions working for you, or even go to Malifaux and fight over deserted buildings in the zones.
Zombies, wild dogs, other crews, monsters, crazy stuff like Killjoy, or the Neverborn....
Your imagination is your only borders on what you can do.
Read through th stories on the Malifaux site, and in the rulebook to see how the crews interrelate and how you can play ladder and map campaigns, and your going to get a few great ideas.
My biggest learning curve was the card based play. It takes getting used to after playing mini games with dice, but after you get the mindset, it's not too bad.
Finally, as a personal, I play necromunda, too. The two games are different animals, but not to unsimilar to not like them both.
This Malifaux stuff is completely different, and it is something to think about. If your not used to it it can be a challenge.
Best thing I can say is that you only need a couple of guys to play it, honestly, and that the cowboy/ gothic thing is a nice change of scenery compaired to having skulls everywhere, and the GW taint all over everything.
Theres a couple of good games to be had by just playing it out on a table with a graveyard and a couple of clumps of trees, and the goal miniature.
I used a paper model of a moselium, on one, and the Reaper Magic treasures on a couple of others, that way you could use them with some kooky freak rules for some laughs.
One was 2 more zombies showing up, the other I had was for the magic treasure to attract a random pack of zombies in there. I used the GW guys I have for proxies, but it was pretty funny to see a Return of The Living Dead bum rush of mindless zombies go in for the kill, and then get beatdown when my teddybear mixed it up in there.
I can't say personally that I like some of the companies plays, specificly concerning the "Special edition" slant, but that isn't really a showstopper.
I don't like that I have money, and they don't want to sell me a product unless I have to go to some sort of con or something, and I don't like that you have no idea of what some of the characters are, and then have to make a decision on only half a game. That is me personally, though. It is not something I dwell on, and it really isn't something I really enjoy about this company when they really arn't that well know to be acting in this sort of manner.
Other then that I like the game, and would recommend it.
The game plays fun, the guys look cool, and the setting is interesting ( with a lot of room to grow!)

I love Necromunda, and recently picked up Malifaux. I wasn't as impressed as some on here. There's a huge emphasis on unique, named characters. Every game is full of them, which kind of takes some of the fun out of creating your own heroes and lowly gang members and watching them grow. There's no progression, another strike. The models, while interesting, aren't my taste, and the tone of the game just doesn't do it for me. I'd recommend picking up the rulebook and giving it a read-through before committing to models.
On a totally un-related note, anyone want to swap me for my Malifaux rulebook and some random undead prostitute model?

Throw em up in the Swap Shop, Im sure someone will take em off your hands for something you need. Dakka is good for that.
Alternatively, try the OP.

I absolutely love Malifaux. It's cheap, it's tons of fun, and the models are pretty awesome.
I've not played Necromunda, only read about it. However, as others have said it's a very different game. I do wish it had character progression, but it's still a ton of fun without it. The card mechanic is really interesting and works very well! It gives you a lot more control and also reduces that chances of bad roll after bad roll.
I actually wrote up a review that explains in more detail how the game works. You can check that out here: http://tabletopgeeks.com/malifaux-review/

I love Malifaux. I've honestly played 40k maybe twice since I began Malifaux about 2 months ago. I feel it is more involved and requires a lot more thinking than just spamming certain units and hoping for good dice rolls. The price is also very nice, and the models are simply amazing and paint up very nicely. I'd suggest going for it.
Also try posting on the Wyrd forums to see if there is a Henchman in your area who could maybe let you demo a game so you know for sure before you drop some cash on the models.
