I picked up Bioshock 2 for my computer and got the DVD disc for the game.

Went to put it into my drive, and the computer did not recognize it had a DVD in it.

Decided to try my Borderlands DVD...didn't work either.

Went to an orlder DVD from Titan Quest and didn't work either.

Tried an old Fable:Lost Chapters CD-ROM and it recognized it.

Computer says Driver is working fine and up to date, so perhaps the Drive's DVD capabilities are shot and its time for a new one.

Any thoughts?

Try Updating the firmware of the DVD drive. I was having the same problem and this fixed it

My mums old DVD drive had a similar thing happen, it worked fine with Cds but just lost the ability to read DVDs.

Firmware update may fix it, but it shouldnt be too expensive to get a new one if not.

Driver update info from HP was downloaded and installed, comp restart, and still unable to read DVDs...

It make the little reading noise as if it really wants to read the DVD several times, but in the end does not find a DVD in the drive.

First I'd check out your DVDs on another computer, see if that reads them. If it does, I'd pick up another DVD drive, you can get a new DVD burner from the internet for under $30, or for much less if you just want a reader.

Drvies burn out sometimes, fourtunatly they are easy and cheap to replace.

I just got a new DVD burner for $22 off Newegg. If other DVD drives read your disks and the drivers aren't fixing what you've got then replace it. The things are just not worth fighting with anymore for what they cost. I'm not one for automatically suggesting replacing things but for what they cost if you spend more than an hour fixing it then you're just losing money.
