Hi! I am looking ot upgrade the marines in the black reach set to a 1000 point army. Whiich models would be the best to invest in? My two boys each have their own armies, one is ork, the other is tyranid. We are all aiming to get to 1000 points so we can do battle in the basement.
Any help is appreciated

I did the following Imperial Fist themed for 1500pts:
HQ:
1xCaptain (model from box)
Elites:
5xAssault Terminators 3xThunder hammer and Storm Shields and 2 with Lightning Claws (I had the bits for them)
They ride in a Land Raider Crusader
Troops:
2x10 space marines w/missile launcher and flamer both in rhinos
Heavy support:
2xvindicators
1xLand raider
I had some of these things before I got my AoBR sets, but I bought:
2xVindicators
1xLand Raider redeemer
1xLand Raider
I would go with another tactical squad and either Rhino's or Razorback's for the squads. If you want to use the Terminators I'd either use them as is, or order some bits from the Warstore here in the states. Then get them either a redeemer or crusader to ride in.
If I want my list to be more competative, I'd most likely drop the Land Raider for another Tactical squad with Rhino, then if I wanted to go to 1750 I would add it back in.
I hope this helps.
Chappy P!

Okay, I did a bit of tinkering and I think I maybe a half-way decent list here.
HQ - 130 Pts.
Space Marine Librarian (Maybe you can proxy, or convert the BR Captain)
-Terminator Armor
Elites - 200 Pts.
Terminator Assault Squad (5)
- x3 Lightning Claws
- x2 TH/SS
Troops - 285 Pts.
Tactical Squad A (10)
- Meltagun, ML, Powerfist, Combi-Melta
Tactical Squad B (10)
-Flamer, ML, Powerfist, Combi-Flamer/Melta
Heavy Support - 182 Pts.
Devastator Squad (7)
- 4 ML's
Total Pts: 997 Pts.
If you can possibly drop the termie armor on the Libby drop one guy from the Dev squad and pick up a Razorback for some extra armor and firepower.
My only issue with this army is the fact that the termies may slow you down without a transport.

In 1000 games you shouldn't really take terminators. they're far too expensive (200 points is a lot you can spend on other things)
Also your terminators will be running and targeted early in the game.
If you want librarian he'll have to go with tactical squad.
My idea for upgrading:
Librarian
Power Armour, Combi-Melta & Force Sword
Avenger & Might of Ancients
110
TROOPS
Tactical Squad (10 man)
Sergeant: Combi-Melta & Powerfist
Melta Bombs
Melta Gun
Missile Launcher
215
Tactical Squad (10 man)
Sergeant: Combi-Melta & Powerfist
Melta Bombs
Melta Gun
Missile Launcher
215
Tactical Squad (10 man)
Sergeant: Combi-Flamer
Flamer
Missile Launcher
180
HEAVY SUPPORT
Predator
Lascannon Sponsons
HK Missile Launcher
130
Predator
Lascannon Sponsons
HK Missile Launcher
130
980 points

What do you guys think of devastator squads? Are they worth the points?
kailias Automatically Appended Next Post: I don't have much choice with the terminators, they are part of black reach. Although, I don't have to use them. One thing I find that kinda sucks is deep striking them. Sometimes you lose your squad on a bad role.
kalias Automatically Appended Next Post: While we are on the subject of terminators, they are good and bad. How do you get around loosing the squad when you deep strike them. Do you have to use a drop pod?

I feel that if you want to run Devs, then run them in a full squad of 10. Sure its a bit expensive but it gives you ablative wounds and the ability to shoot multiple targets via combat squads.

Devs,
I would definitely say run them with atleast 7 or 8 in the squad, unless they are in cover or behind your lines very well.
Terminators are a bit of a point sink, but depends on how you use them. Deep striking also depends on the terrain/table you are playing on as well. If it is heavily cluttered aka lots of difficult terrain, deep striking is a bad idea, and it is also a bad idea to deep strike near table edges as well. I always try to drop atleast 10" away from anything, maybe more for troops. Drop podding is a little safer, but costs more points. I usually load my terminators out for CC, and especially in a full squad they can take on quite a bit, its just a process of getting them to CC.
Also are you opposed to making your Space Marines into an already existing Codex? aka like Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Dark Angels, etc? Or did you want to stay vanilla, like Ultramarines, Imperial Fists...etc?

I hate devs... So expensive, not a scoring unit, can't move and fire, easy to kill and if you don't pack lots of them, they'll get blasted with ease... If you take them, you need extra bodies as meat fooder once opponent starts firing at them... I'd always rather take tank to do their job then them... Unless I go all footy, which is never

If your boys are young, I suggest letting them get whatever they want - and let them have fun! Their interest will go way up if they get to choose their favorite units, and this is the best investment since it (hopefully) means you'll play more games together.
If they're older, well, they will probably also have an idea what they want as well. A little light conversation will uncover the truth!
Good luck! Any game you can play with your boys is a good investment indeed! Time together is the real gift.

Okay, so the black reach set is 2 x tac. squads, a captain, a terminator squad and a dread.
Using everything you have, this is the least costly ($$) route I can see.
HQ;
Captain - 100pts (Or use him as a Librarian; your choice.)
Elites:
Terminator squad; Assault cannon. - 230pts (Captain goes here)
Dread; plasma cannon, DCCW - 110 pts
Dread; T/L lascannon, DCCW - 135pts
Troops;
Tac. squad (10man), ML, flamer, sergeant with boltpistol, chainsword and melta bombs, Rhino - 210pts
Tac. squad (10man), ML, meltagun, sergeant with boltpistol, chainsword and melta bombs, Rhino - 215pts
Not too competitive, but it would be fun. You'd need 2 x Rhino's, another dread and an assault cannon on one of your terminators. (Everything else can be improvised.)

My view on devastators is min/max. Im a blood angel player and I have a squad of 5 devastators w/ 4x Plasma canons and it only costs 150 pts. Its a waste of points to pay 16 pts for additional wounds.
I would keep in mind however that when buying the DEV box, you get 2 Lascanons, 2 Plasma, 2 Heavy bolters, 1 Missle launcher, and 1 Multi-melta.
I wouldnt run Devs in the normal space marine codex unless you are running 4 missle launchers because you have to pay extra for the same weapons BA get.

I started with 2 aobr sets (they were at discount, and my friend started orks)... You get dread with MM and DCCW w stormbolter and no bitz
There is only one squad of marines, with only ML and flamer (that's ok), and captain... If you want to go from there, rhino is a must... You won't believe how efficient marines become once you give them rhino... That flamer, which you probably never managed to use before someone assaulted you, will become your favorite weapon
As for the rest, You need second tac squad, and then it depends... I bought land raider, and it helped at the start... Not too bad for starters to mobilise your termies and captain... It's hard to be competitive untill you get your collection to 2000pts... Unless you start to buy exactly model for a list... So, do you wanna play for fun (if you and your friend are both new, and you don't play with others for now, i recommend that you play for fun, with non-competitive lists on both sides, cuz that's the best way to get to know all the units) or do you want to be competitive (in that case we'll give you few ideas for lists, so you can go from there)... Automatically Appended Next Post: If you want to go to 100pts, here's what you can do...
Take terminator libby, give him gate of infinity and second power that you like... Give him shooty termies (you just need assault cannon to add to the squad)... Take two squads of marines, buy them rhino.... And get yourself a nice heavy support, like vindi or predator with AC and lascannon.. I'd go with vindi and then give my tacs lascannons, so whrn there are many vehicles, you can combat squad...
