'S'in the title really.

QuickShade is overpriced like heck: Are there any products that have the same level of quality? I'm fine with paying for what I know works if there literally are no competitors on the same level but if it's just some normal product with a pretty label on it then hit me with another option

And also, where can I get a decent varnish for my minis? Matte ofc.

Thankadank.

Acrylic/Water Based Woodstain is what people have used for years to get the same effect as Quickshade

And it should be the same? I wouldn't want to gamble...

I use Citadel washes for almost the same effect minus Quickshades glossy finish and minus the usage of turpentine to clean brushes.

Well I always figured if I got QuickShade I'd forgo the brushing method and just dunk...

Wood grain varnish is NOT the same as quickshade. It shades quickly, but it also leaves is insane gloss varnish that never quite leaves the model.

Quickshade has the problem too, but matt spray can actually dull it pretty well.

EDIT- That said, I have never had a model that a devlan mud wash and a highlight didn't look practically the same on as quickshade...

I'd bet money that you could find a Minwax (I think their Polyshade line is the weapon of choice) product at Home Depot, dump it in a Quickshade can, and if you matched the color properly, no one would know the difference. That's how people dipped minis before Army Painter and that's how many still do.

As for matte varnish, most people around here swear by Testor's Dullcote, which you're more likely to find at a craft store than a home improvement store. I've also used a generic matte varnish by Krylon I picked up a while ago, probably at Home Depot. Can't recall the exact name, though.

Quickshade will last you quire a lot, 200 normal character models or so, even mroe if you paint on instead of dip (although I've found dipping is pretty darn quick to do and good stress relief)

Try buying it on a site that gives discounts rather than Army Painter directly.

The results also look really nice, definately not GD winners, but pretty nice to look at from armys length away. (See my Blood Ravens thread for an example)

I dunked these in a quick-drying wood stain from Wilkinson's:

I couldn't really brush off the excess as my right arm was in a cast at the time!

I know some people blutak they're minis to an electric drill then spin them in a bucket after dipping to remove the excess.
Re the matt varnish I believe the secret is about 20 deg C ambient temp, low humidity & a very light coat.

Those look surprisingly good, I've heard that wood-staining products are more viscous than Army Painter and thus harder to use?
