Hi guys, I have a question for you: What's the best way to kill a fully kitted melee tyrant with IG? Without resorting to a pie plate dispenser or a heavy weapons platoon.

I've been doing trials and rattlings seem to fail miserably. Melta CCS don't seem very effective... Plasma shows some promise but I'm afraid of getting pwned by the time I get within rapid fire range.

Tyrants have solid toughness and space marine armor as well as good initiative and with the various melee upgrades the ability to rip anything apart in melee.

What does your army look like? A Vendetta with Veteran Squad may be a good answer, as most IG do not want to get into combat and the Vendetta and Veterans can dispense alot of damage in a short time.

Vendetta Gunships with 3 TL Las cannons and Veterans with 2-3 Plasma Guns and a Las cannon team in a Chimera really put the pain on Tyranid Monsters. If you don't move Plasma guns have a range of 24 inches. Just make sure you aren't with in 12 inches so his tyrant can assault you.

I forgot to mention this was for a 700 point match. I want to get my friend into the hobby with me and he has a hive tyrant, which I can't figure out a way to take out without getting a leman russ or similar and instantly eat the rest of his army for breakfast.

Since I'm starting out too I have:
2 * 10 man veteran squad
1 CCS with chimera
1 ministorum priest

Probably thinking of getting a primaris too.

I don't mind getting different units, I just don't want to massacre him too badly

I'd definately look into getting a vendetta or two. As a nid player, that's really the number 1 problem causer for my monstrous creatures against IG. Melta vets and plasma vets can be a pain, but if they are in range to shoot, usually they are in range to be eaten by something else. The vendettas can pretty much stay out of harm's reach for most of the game. They are also pretty nice anti-armor platforms as well and work as a last ditch transport if the need arises.

On a points budget, the answer is plasma. Burns happen. Get over it.

A CCS with 4 plasma guns runs up within 12". The officer uses Bring it down! on himself (as he's always in range...). The 8 shots yield 7 hits yields 5 wounds. Voila, dead tyrant. Against the bigger bugs, you need to do a single wound to it first, or bring a plasma pistol for the officer.

Easy peasy.

the way i do it with my guard is rough riders and Mogul Kamir or whatever the lunatic horsemans name is. *cough* Mogul Khan *cough*

His unit with furious charge puts out something akin to 20+ strength six initiative six hits... ok so once the screaming and shouting is done your horsemen are usually only so much mince meat but theres usually a very dead bug on the end of someones lance.

Only problem i have with them is the RAGE issue. So i find holding them in reserve works really well. Its a risk but i've had it work a few times on more than one hive tyrant/Godfex

Plasma
a few platoons tied together with a commisar could tarpit it for the entire game
bring it down lasguns, a squad of hydras, a vendetta, plasma lemans, rough riders, the list goes on.
