I am Really looking at getting into Warhammer 40k.

But I lack a Codex for both the Imperial Guard and the Space Marines.
So I Do not know the pros and Cons of each army.

BUT I am looking at Getting either a Space Marine Army or a Imperial Guard army Setup.

Could some one tell me what is a good setup for Space Marines and Imperial Guard that a newbie can handle???

G'day mate!

Okay, if you wanna start marines then I reckon your best option is to get the Assault on Blackreach box. The marine models are pretty good, you get a bunch of units you will use, plus all the templetes dice and rulebooks you need. You even get some orks that you can either sell or crush with a brick like I did because they are Xenos scum.

As for Imperial Guard, my army of choice, get a battle force box to start with because its good value and you will need everything in it to begin with.

I'd suggest more, but either army has a huge mix of units, most awesome, but some not so great when used in the wrong way.

As for the codex books, seriously, don't buy jack until you've at least read through them. If your serious about starting, go to a GW store and ask them the same question. In your country I hear they totally barrage you with sales crap, but they will have copies of the books you can leaf through and get an idea of what can do what. Then buy one or the other...or both is better. Read them backwards and then decide.

IG is one of those armies that can get very large, very quickly, and if you make the wrong choices it will cost you twice as much money.

Marines are a bit more simple, in that because they are a more expensive army point wise, this means you have to buy less.

Good luck mate, get buying!

One Problem, I do not know of a store near me that supports Warhammer 40k

My FLGS (The Game Grid) will get me the stuff but they do not have it on their shelves. :(

EDIT:

There are 2 stores near me that support 40k. Found them on the Games Workshop site.

Okay, well, that's not so bad. Get the AOBR box set first so you've got the rules, then get either codex and go from there.

It's all about knowing the rules and game first anyway, most people that play 40k for any length of time end up getting several armies, so having a few different books is no bad thing.

My best suggestion is to start with Marines. Most people seem to, I did, and they are an easy army to play with at the beginning.

Imperial guard are a much...well, not harder, but more complicated army to play. If you don't use the units properly then you will get whipped bad. Marines are a bit more forgiving.

Let me know when you've got one or the other choice locked down and I can give you some tips as to what is good to start with.

If you want to get into 40k, I'd suggest going to thewarstore.com and ordering from them - it's 20% off GW's prices, which makes biting the bullet a little easier.

Marines are an easier army to play, and cheaper to get started. You only need a few squads of men and a captain and you've got a decent force for a smaller sized game. Black Reach, as previously suggested, is an awesome starting point. If you have a friend interested in Orks that's even better, since you guys can split the price.

Guard are more complex in their layout, but still not too hard to figure out. Instead of taking individual squads of 10 men, you take platoons ranging from 25 to 100+ men, depending what choices you make. It's also far more expensive to get a good sized army going, since each Guardsman is about 1/3rd the points cost of one Space Marine.

I say split Black Reach with a buddy and work from there.
