With Games Day coming up I thought I might pick up a Deathstorm for my Blood Angels. Has anyone had any experience using them / facing them and would you say it's worth getting one? For those who don't know Deathstorms are regular Drop Pods but when they land, they attack every unit within 12" with D3 Whirlwind or Assault Cannon attacks at BS2. I'm tempted to get the Whirlwind one but I though I'd ask anyone who's used them before wherever they're worth it.

Thanks,

I guess they're alright. more for shock and awe. rather use the points for a dreadnought drop pod though! Mmm blood talons

Yeah Blood Talons are pretty sweet. As for the shock-and-awe of Deathstorms, the huge impact that they could do on turn one can be devestating for anything with a 4+ or worse save.

Well, how many points do they cost?

I think they're either 50 or 75. That's for the Whirlwind option, upgrading them to Assault Cannons costs an extra 20 points. Frankly I fail to see why anyone would want the Assault Cannons.

Well, 50 pts for an immobilzed, short-range Whirlwind with AV 12 is not a bad deal.

Yeah it's pretty good when you consider that it fires D3 templates at every unit in range.

Well it is 75 points, open-topped, and takes up a heavy support slot. It will also shoot friendly models within 12" on the turn it arrives.

So, I guess it could be good depending on the situation? I think versus hordes or closely spaced vehicle armies (with the assault cannon attack).

Ironically, it could be a danger to drop-pod armies because you could shoot yourself.

It could be a danger to my own forces, but if I land any other pods out of 12" I can cover a large area with heavy fire, while keeping friendly casualties at a minimum. I'm not a fan at all of the Assault Cannon upgrade, as it is only BS2, and even if you roll for 12 shots, you would only have an average of 4 shots hitting. Not worth it at all.

Seems worth it to me.

I read the rules, i want 3...
take 3 other pods and pick the 3 uber-pods to land first turn...

Standard anti-DS tactic is castling, GL with that.
Or reserves, land your normal pods first.

I concur. You should go for it if for no other reason than to see your opponent's face as he stammers "it does what?"

This is fantastic advice, I am jealous I didn't think of it myself.

Sounds pretty diesel, knowing FW prices, may not be worth it though.

Ok, your opponent asks whats in your list, and finds out you have at least 6 pods.
3 normal, 3 deathstorms.
If he deploys by castling up in a corner, your 3 deathstorms will have a field day.
If he reserves, your normal pods can drop in while your deathstorms wait it out.

Deathstorms are one of a few FW units (the others that come to mind being the Hades Breaching Drill and the Lucius Dreanought Drop Pod) which are generally unfun for your opponent (unless they want an absolutely hard WAAC game play style).

That said, I like them in apocalypse where that sort of over-the-top-ness is more appropriate, and met by a whole host of even more crazy powerful stuff.
